Rock Climbing in the Himalayas
Uttarakhand's geology — granite, quartzite and gneiss — creates excellent rock climbing conditions. From the smooth granite slabs near Rishikesh to the complex multi-pitch routes of Munsiyari, there are options for every grade of climber.
Top Climbing Areas
1. Rishikesh – Best for Beginners & Intermediates
The Rocky Island and Neer Garh crags near Rishikesh offer well-bolted sport routes from 4a to 7b. Several adventure companies run introductory rock climbing courses including wall climbing techniques, rappelling and lead climbing. The mild climate from October to June makes this ideal for year-round climbing.
2. Munsiyari – Serious Alpine Climbing
The Khaliya Top and Thamri Kund area above Munsiyari has granite faces suitable for multi-pitch routes. Experienced climbers use Munsiyari as a base to attempt peaks like Rajrambha, Hardeol, and Trishuli in the Johar Valley. Requires mountaineering experience and equipment.
3. Binsar – Bouldering Paradise
The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary has numerous granite boulders scattered through oak forests — perfect for bouldering sessions. The Kalpataru viewpoint area has problems from V0 to V8. No ropes required — ideal for a spontaneous session.
4. Dwarahat, Almora – Hidden Gem
Little-known among the climbing community — the quartzite cliffs above Dwarahat offer virgin routes waiting to be developed. Several local climbers have put up routes in the 5c–7a range on the sun-facing south walls.

Rappelling
Rappelling (abseil) down natural rock faces is one of the most accessible adventure activities in Uttarakhand. Operators in Rishikesh, Lansdowne and Munsiyari offer introductory rappelling sessions starting at just ₹500 per person. Heights range from 15m to 100m depending on the site.
