Uttarkashi's High Alpine Meadow

Dayara Bugyal

Dayara Bugyal is one of India's finest high-altitude alpine meadows — a vast rolling grassland at 3,048m in the Uttarkashi district, with the Bandarpunch and Gangotri mountain ranges on the northern horizon. In summer it is a flower-carpeted trek destination; in winter it becomes India's most beautiful natural ski slope, with knee-deep powder snow.

Trek Details & Activities

Trek from Barsu village (8 km, 950m gain): Dayara Bugyal is reached from Barsu village (2,100m) on a 8-km trail through dense rhododendron and oak forest — emerging into the open bugyal at 3,048m. The forest section (April–May) has spectacular rhododendron in bloom; the meadow section has views of Bandarpunch (6,316m), Gangotri peaks and the Garhwal main range. Time: 4–5 hours up.

Summer bugyal (May–October): The meadow is carpeted in alpine flowers — primulas, anemones, potentilla, iris — from late May through June. Camping on the bugyal (tents, sleeping bag, bonfire setup by camp operators from Barsu/Raithal village) is the main experience. ₹1,500–₂,₅₀₀/person with meals. The sunset and sunrise on Bandarpunch from the camp are among the finest meadow-camp views in Garhwal.

Winter skiing (December–February): When Dayara receives heavy snowfall (2–3m in January), the open meadow slope becomes a natural ski run used by GMVN for basic skiing and snowshoeing camps. Not a resort (no lifts) — but cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the slope are genuine high-altitude snow experiences. GMVN organises winter snow camps at Dayara.

Nearby: Raithal village (3 km from Barsu): A traditional Garhwali village with homestays — the most authentic base for the Dayara trek. Several homestays (₹600–₁,₂₀₀/night with meals) run by local families who also provide guides.

Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
  • Best time: June–July (peak flower season, rhododendron and alpine flora at maximum). September–October (clear views, green meadow, pleasant temperatures). December–February (heavy snow, winter skiing camp).
  • Raithal homestays: The best base for the Dayara trek — village homestays, local guides (mandatory for winter), mule support for camping equipment. More authentic than hiring city-based operators.
  • Combine with Dodital: The Dodital trek (another classic Uttarkashi trek to a high-altitude lake) starts near Sangam Chatti — combine both in a 5-day Uttarkashi trek circuit.
FAQs
Can I camp on Dayara Bugyal?
Yes — camping on the bugyal itself is permitted and is the primary way to experience it (staying to witness both sunset and sunrise on the peaks). Camp equipment (tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment) comes with the operator from Raithal or Barsu village. Book through the village homestay owners — they manage the camp permits and supply. Camping cost: ₹1,500–₂,₅₀₀/person (includes transport from base village to camp, meals, guide). Forest department fire permission is handled by the operators.
