Top Places & Activities

Surkanda Devi Temple (2 km trek from Kaddukhal): A goddess temple at 2,756m on a Himalayan ridge — one of the most important Shakti Peeths in Garhwal. Reached by a 2-km forest trail from Kaddukhal village (5 km from Kanatal). The view from the temple encompasses the major Garhwal peaks: Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Gangotri range. Best at dawn — go early and watch sunrise on the peaks before the haze sets in. Entry: free.

Apple orchards (September–October): Kanatal's orchards produce high-quality Himalayan apples — the harvest season September–October allows visitors to see and buy direct from the orchards. The apple trees in blossom (April) and in fruit (September) are both photogenic.

Forest camping (₹1,200–₂,₅₀₀/person): Kanatal has several good camping sites in the cedar and apple-orchard landscape. Camp operators provide tents, sleeping bags, bonfire and meals. Winter camping (December–January) with snow is available for the hardier visitor.

Nature walks and mountain biking: The road and trails from Kanatal to Chamba and Dhanaulti pass through exceptional forest. Mountain biking on these roads (bikes available for hire from camp operators) is a relatively undiscovered activity.

FAQs
Is Kanatal good for snow?
Yes — at 2,600m, Kanatal receives reliable snowfall in December–February, often heavier than Mussoorie (at 2,000m). The combination of apple orchards and cedar forest under snow makes Kanatal one of Garhwal's most picturesque winter destinations. The Surkanda Devi trail may be icy in January — carry trekking poles for that visit.
