Switzerland of India

Kausani

Kausani is a ridge-top village at 1,890m with a 300-km panoramic view of the Himalayan range — Nanda Devi (7,816m), Trishul (7,120m), Panwali Dwar, Nanda Kot and the full Kumaon snowfields. Mahatma Gandhi called it "the Switzerland of India" and spent 14 days here in 1929, writing his commentary on the Bhagavad Gita at the Anasakti Ashram.

Top Places & Activities

Himalayan sunrise (300-km panorama): The primary reason to visit Kausani — the ridge faces north and the snow peaks fill the entire horizon. Nanda Devi (India's second highest at 7,816m) appears directly ahead, with Trishul to its left. The peaks glow orange-pink at dawn for approximately 20 minutes before the light normalises. Best October–November and March–April. Watch from the Anasakti Ashram garden or the Pant museum terrace.

Anasakti Ashram: The ashram where Mahatma Gandhi stayed in June 1929 — he wrote "Anasakti Yoga" (his commentary on the Bhagavad Gita) here, captivated by the Himalayan view. The ashram has been preserved and a museum on Gandhi's life has been added. Daily prayers at 6 am and 6 pm. Guests can stay in the ashram (₹200–₄₀₀/night, simple rooms). Entry: free.

Kausani Tea Gardens (KMVN tea): Kausani is one of the few Himalayan tea-growing areas in Uttarakhand — the tea garden at 1,890m produces Uttarakhand tea sold as "Kausani Tea." Walking through the tea garden in the morning light with the snow peaks behind is one of Kausani's best experiences. Tea tasting and purchase at the estate.

Rudradhari Falls and Pinus Forest (12 km): The Rudradhari Falls — a waterfall in a dense pine and rhododendron forest — reached by a 3 km trek from the road. The Rudradhari Mahadev temple near the falls adds religious significance to a beautiful forest walk.

Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
  • Best time: October–November (best Himalayan views, clear skies, comfortable weather). March–April (rhododendron and orchard blossom, clear visibility before summer haze).
  • Stay on the ridge: Kausani is a ridge village — all the best views are from the ridge. Some hotels are below the ridge on the slope and lose the panoramic view. Verify the hotel has direct Himalayan views before booking.
  • Combine with Bageshwar and Munsiyari: Kausani is ideally the first stop in a deeper Kumaon circuit — Kausani → Bageshwar → Munsiyari is a 4-day circuit accessing progressively wilder high-altitude Kumaon.
FAQs
Why did Gandhi call Kausani the Switzerland of India?
Mahatma Gandhi visited Kausani in June 1929 and was so struck by the Himalayan panorama — the snow peaks visible from the ridge in a 300-km arc — that he wrote in his diary that Kausani reminded him of Switzerland. The comparison was to the sweep of the mountain view and the Alpine quality of the high-altitude ridge, not the weather or the landscape type. Gandhi stayed 14 days (originally planned 2 days), writing his Bhagavad Gita commentary while captivated by the view he saw each morning.
