Overview

The 4 Dham Yatra — also widely known as Char Dham Yatra or Chota Char Dham — is the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage circuit in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The four divine abodes (dhams) are:

2GangotriGoddess Ganga3,048 mUttarkashiOrigin of the Ganga; road accessible via Uttarkashi

The 4 Dham Yatra follows the traditional west-to-east sequence: Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath. Starting from Haridwar or Rishikesh, the full circuit covers approximately 1,100 km by road and is completed over 10–14 days. The temples open on Akshaya Tritiya (April/May) and close in October/November before the Himalayan winter.

Char Dham vs 4 Dham — what is the difference?
In common usage, "4 Dham" and "Char Dham" both refer to the same Uttarakhand pilgrimage. Technically, "Char Dham" refers to four pan-India sacred seats (Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, Rameshwaram) identified by Adi Shankaracharya. The Uttarakhand circuit is formally the "Chota Char Dham" (Small Char Dham) but is universally called Char Dham or 4 Dham in North India. If someone asks about "4 Dham Yatra Uttarakhand," they mean Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath.

How to Reach

The 4 Dham Yatra begins and ends at Haridwar or Rishikesh — Uttarakhand's twin pilgrimage gateways:

  • By Train to Haridwar: Delhi–Haridwar by Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi in 4.5 hrs — the most convenient option from North India
  • By Road from Delhi: 220 km on NH-58, 4–5 hrs. Direct buses (UPSRTC Volvo) and private taxis available
  • By Air: Delhi → Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun (45 min flight) + taxi to Haridwar (50 km, 1.5 hrs)
  • From Mumbai/South India: Fly to Delhi or Dehradun, connect to Haridwar

From Haridwar, the 4 Dham route by road: Haridwar → Barkot (Day 1) → Yamunotri (Day 2) → Uttarkashi (Day 3) → Gangotri (Day 4) → Guptkashi (Day 5) → Kedarnath (Day 6–7) → Joshimath (Day 8) → Badrinath (Day 9) → return Haridwar (Day 10–11).

The 4 Dham Yatra by helicopter departs from Sahastradhara Helipad, Dehradun and completes the circuit in 4–5 days. Full helicopter packages cost ₹1,20,000–₹1,80,000 per person all-inclusive.

Best Time

The best time for 4 Dham Yatra follows the pilgrimage season (May–November):

  • May (Opening Season): Akshaya Tritiya opening, fresh snow on peaks, highest spiritual energy. Book 60–90 days in advance — most popular period.
  • June: Warm, clear pre-monsoon weather. Good availability. Slightly quieter than May opening week.
  • September (Best Overall): Post-monsoon perfection — clear Himalayan skies, dry roads, moderate crowds, comfortable temperatures (5°C–14°C at dhams). The single best month for a 4 Dham Yatra experience.
  • October: Beautiful cold-season clarity. Pre-closing rush in last two weeks. Early October is tranquil; late October sees the closing ceremony crowds.
  • July–August (Avoid): Heavy monsoon, landslides on the 4 Dham highway, risky Kedarnath trek. Only for those with full flexibility and travel insurance.
Travel Tips
  • Complete 4 Dham registration first: Biometric registration at the official Uttarakhand government portal is mandatory. Free of charge. Register for all four dhams in one go before departure.
  • Book Kedarnath helicopter early: The only dham requiring a 16 km trek. Helicopter from Phata/Guptkashi/Sirsi (7–10 min, ₹4,500–₹8,000 one way) is the most in-demand transport on the entire 4 Dham circuit. Book at heliyatra.irctc.co.in as soon as the portal opens (February–March).
  • 4 Dham Yatra packages vs self-arranged: Packages (₹25,000–₹80,000 all-inclusive) handle all logistics — transport, accommodation, registration, meals and guide. Self-arranged trips (₹15,000–₹45,000) require more planning but offer flexibility.
  • Carry cash beyond Guptkashi: ATMs are scarce at Kedarnath and Badrinath. Withdraw ₹5,000–₹10,000 at Guptkashi (before Kedarnath) and Joshimath (before Badrinath).
  • Trek preparation: Train for the Kedarnath trek 2–4 weeks before — daily 45-min walks on stairs or inclines help enormously. The trek climbs 1,600 m over 16 km — the last 6 km are steep.
  • Weather gear is non-negotiable: Pack thermal layers, waterproof jacket and boots regardless of season. Nights at Kedarnath (3,583 m) are near-freezing even in August.
