Bagnath Temple (ancient Shiva temple): A 10th–14th century stone temple to Shiva (Bagnath = Lord of the Forest) at the Saryu-Gomti confluence — one of the most significant temples in Kumaon. The inscribed stone panels include 14th-century inscriptions recording grants by the Katyuri kings. The temple tank and the river confluence setting are beautiful. Entry: free.
Saryu and Gomti river confluence: The town centre of Bageshwar is built on the spit between the two rivers — sacred bathing ghats, the Bagnath temple above and the mountains visible in three directions. The Uttarayani festival (January 14) draws massive crowds to the river confluence.
Pindari Glacier trek (4–5 days, base: Song village): The Pindari Glacier (3.7 km long, 3,820m altitude) is reached by a 4-day trek from Song (18 km from Bageshwar) through the Kafni and Pindari valleys. One of India's most accessible major glaciers. Best June–October. Pindari trail has KMVN rest houses at intervals.
Sunderdhunga Glacier (4 days): A more scenic and less-visited alternative to Pindari — the Sunderdhunga valley features the Maiktoli and Sukhram peaks (6,803m and 6,247m) as backdrop. Solo or with local guide from Bageshwar.

Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
- Best time: October–November (post-monsoon, clear views, pleasant temperature at 959m). For Pindari/Sunderdhunga treks: June–September (passes open, glacier accessible).
- Combine with Kausani: Kausani (38 km, 1.5 hrs) and Bageshwar are a natural 2-night pair — Kausani for the Himalayan panorama, Bageshwar for the temple and river confluence, with the Pindari trek as an extension.
- Trek logistics: Register and hire guide/porter for Pindari Glacier trek at the forest department office in Bageshwar. KMVN rest houses on the trail do not need advance booking (except peak season June–July). Carry cash — no ATMs beyond Bageshwar on the trek route.
FAQs
- How difficult is the Pindari Glacier trek?
- The Pindari Glacier trek is rated Easy to Moderate — suitable for first-time trekkers in reasonable fitness. The trail climbs from 1,800m (Song) to 3,820m (glacier) over 4 days, with gradual altitude gain, rest houses at each camp, and a well-maintained path along the Pindar river. The maximum altitude (3,820m) can cause mild altitude symptoms — rest the first day at Zero Point before ascending to the glacier. Children above 10 years and older adults in good health complete it comfortably.
