Overview
Badrinath is connected by a paved motor road all the way to the temple — the only Char Dham with direct vehicle access. The standard approach is: train to Rishikesh or Haridwar → road to Joshimath (overnight) → road to Badrinath (day trip or overnight). No helicopter, no trekking required. Total journey from Delhi: 14–18 hours by train + road.

Planning
Route 1 — By train + road (recommended):
The best way to reach Badrinath from Delhi or other cities. Take an overnight train from Delhi to Haridwar (Haridwar Jan Shatabdi, Dehradun Express, Mussoorie Express) — depart Delhi evening, arrive Haridwar/Rishikesh by 4:00–6:00 AM. From Rishikesh, hire a private taxi (₹4,500–₹7,000 per car, seats 4–6) or join a shared taxi (₹600–₹900/seat) to Joshimath. The mountain road via NH-58 passes through Devprayag (Ganga confluence), Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Pipalkoti — each a beautiful stop. Arrive Joshimath evening. Day 2: early morning drive to Badrinath (50 km, 1.5 hrs), darshan, explore Mana Village and Tapt Kund, return Joshimath.
Route 2 — By flight to Dehradun + road:
Fly Delhi to Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (45 min, ₹3,000–₹8,000, multiple flights daily with IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India). From Jolly Grant, hire a taxi to Joshimath (280 km, 6–7 hrs, ₹6,000–₹9,000). Note: Jolly Grant is 30–40 km from Rishikesh, so the drive to Joshimath is essentially the same route as the train approach but starting 1 hr later from Jolly Grant vs Rishikesh. Best for time-constrained travellers. Flight + road = 8–10 hours total from Delhi.
Route 3 — By road from Delhi (not recommended as single drive):
Delhi → Badrinath is ~510 km by road (NH-334 to Haridwar, then NH-58). Technically driveable in 12–15 hours but mountain roads from Rishikesh onwards are slow, winding and tiring. Not recommended as a single drive — split with an overnight at Rishikesh or Haridwar. If driving your own vehicle: NH-58 from Rishikesh is well-maintained. Fuel up at Chamoli (last petrol pump before Joshimath is reliable). No fuel at Joshimath or Badrinath.
Key stops on the Rishikesh–Badrinath road:
- Devprayag (72 km from Rishikesh): Bhagirathi + Alaknanda confluence — where the Ganga begins. 30-min stop. Steps down to the confluence.
- Rudraprayag (140 km): Mandakini + Alaknanda confluence. Good dhabas. Last comfortable overnight option before Joshimath.
- Chamoli (220 km): District HQ. Fuel, ATMs, restaurants. Last reliable fuel stop before Badrinath.
- Joshimath (245 km, 1,890 m): Recommended overnight base. ATMs (SBI, HDFC), good restaurants, hotels ₹600–₹8,000. The acclimatisation night here is important before Badrinath (3,133 m).
- Govindghat (262 km): Base for Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib trek.
- Badrinath (295 km from Rishikesh, 3,133 m): Temple, Tapt Kund, Mana Village.

Accommodation
- Joshimath overnight (highly recommended): Break the journey at Joshimath (50 km before Badrinath). Better facilities than Badrinath — multiple hotels (₹600–₹8,000), ATMs, restaurants. Acclimatises you to 1,890 m before reaching 3,133 m next morning. See hotels in Joshimath.
- Rishikesh overnight (for very early starters): If doing a 2-night Badrinath trip, night 1 at Rishikesh (plains, comfortable) and night 2 at Joshimath gives the best altitude acclimatisation. Budget Rishikesh hotels: ₹800–₹2,500, laxman jhula area.
- Badrinath overnight: Allows Mahabhishek Puja (4:30 AM) and evening Sayan Aarti without a pre-dawn drive. GMVN Tourist Rest House (₹1,000–₹2,500, book gmvnl.in), private guesthouses (₹800–₹2,500). See hotels guide.
