The minimum comfortable Badrinath itinerary is 3 days from Rishikesh (overnight acclimatisation at Joshimath, temple day, return). From Delhi, a 5-day trip is ideal. Those combining with Valley of Flowers or Kedarnath need 7–10 days. Always add 1 buffer day for road delays — especially in monsoon.

Travel Tips
- Day 2 is always the best: leave Joshimath by 5:00 AM: A 5:00 AM departure from Joshimath gets you to Badrinath by 6:30 AM — just as the first morning darshan queue opens. Before 8:00 AM, the crowd is manageable (20–40 min queue even in May). After 9:00 AM, queues can be 1–2 hrs. The early morning light on Neelkanth peak and the Alaknanda river is also spectacular.
- Sayan Aarti (8:30 PM) is worth an overnight: The Sayan Aarti at Badrinath — the final ritual of the day when the lord is put to sleep — is one of the most moving religious experiences in the Himalaya. Incense, lamps, conch, the sound of the Alaknanda river outside — attending it requires staying overnight in Badrinath. The GMVN guest house is worth booking for this experience alone.
- Buffer day is not optional in July–August: During monsoon, the Joshimath–Badrinath road can be closed for 2–24 hours due to landslides. Do not book a return train with zero buffer days. Always have one extra night in Joshimath as a contingency. September–October: road is reliable, buffer less critical but still wise (1 buffer day).
Accommodation
- 3-day plan nights: Night 1 — Joshimath (₹700–₹6,000). Night 2 — Badrinath GMVN (₹1,000–₹2,500) or return Joshimath.
- 5-day plan nights: Night 1 — train. Night 2 — Joshimath. Night 3 — Badrinath. Night 4 — Rishikesh. Night 5 — train or Delhi.
- 7-day plan nights: Night 1 — train. Night 2 — Joshimath. Nights 3–4 — Ghangaria (Valley of Flowers). Night 5 — Badrinath. Night 6 — Rishikesh. Night 7 — train/Delhi.
