Overview
Accommodation for the Kedarnath Yatra is spread across four key locations — Guptkashi (best hotel base), Sonprayag (budget base), Gaurikund (trek departure point) and Kedarnath itself (the temple overnight stay). Understanding where to stay at each stage is as important as booking early — the wrong base town adds unnecessary hours to an already long day.
Hotel strategy for Kedarnath Yatra: The most important booking is Guptkashi — it is the recommended overnight stop before the trek, combining the best hotel quality, acclimatisation altitude and proximity to Gaurikund. Book Guptkashi first; then arrange Kedarnath temple-side stay if desired.
| Location | Altitude | Role | Price Range/Night | Book Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guptkashi | 1,319 m | Best pre-trek base (recommended) | ₹800–₹4,000 | Very High |
| Sonprayag | 1,829 m | Budget base, closer to trailhead | ₹400–₹1,200 | Medium |
| Gaurikund | 1,982 m | Last road point, basic lodges | ₹400–₹1,000 | Low (last resort) |
| Kedarnath | 3,583 m | Temple-side overnight stay | ₹800–₹3,000 | Very High (book early) |
How to Reach
Guptkashi — the main hotel base — is 175 km from Haridwar (6–7 hrs by road via Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Agastmuni). From Guptkashi, Sonprayag is 45 km (1 hr) and Gaurikund is 50 km (1.25 hrs). Kedarnath itself is accessible only by 16 km trek from Gaurikund or helicopter from Phata/Guptkashi/Sirsi helipads. See the Kedarnath route guide for full transport details.
Best Time
- May peak (1–20 May): Book Guptkashi hotels 60–90 days ahead — they sell out first. GMVN Kedarnath tents must be booked as soon as the season booking portal opens at gmvnl.com (typically February–March). Hotels near the helipad in Phata also fill up quickly.
- June (15 May – 15 Jun): 4–6 weeks advance booking sufficient for Guptkashi. GMVN tents available with 3–4 weeks notice.
- September: 2–4 weeks advance is enough for most Guptkashi hotels. Kedarnath GMVN tents: 2–3 weeks. Rates are 15–25% lower than May peak prices.
- October: Good availability early October. Closing week (around 18–22 Oct) — book 6–8 weeks ahead; devout pilgrims reserve closing week months in advance.
Travel Tips
Guptkashi hotels — what to look for:
- Early breakfast (5:00–5:30 AM) guaranteed: On trek day, you must leave for Sonprayag by 5:30–6:00 AM. Hotels that serve breakfast only from 7:00 AM are useless on trek day. Always confirm early breakfast service before booking.
- Hot water availability: Many Guptkashi hotels use solar geysers — hot water only in afternoon/evening, not mornings. Electric geyser hotels are more reliable for 4 AM pre-trek showers. Ask specifically before booking.
- Valley view rooms: Guptkashi is perched on a ridge with views of the Rudraprayag–Agastmuni valley. Valley-view rooms add to the experience. Often available without significant price premium over non-view rooms.
- Hotel Kedar Ratna, Guptkashi: Consistently rated best overall in Guptkashi — central location, clean rooms, reliable hot water, early breakfast, knowledgeable staff who can advise on trek conditions and helicopter availability. ₹1,500–₹3,000/night.
- GMVN Tourist Rest House, Guptkashi: Government-run, reliable, basic — always a safe fallback if private hotels are full. Check gmvnl.com. ₹800–₹1,800/night.
Kedarnath overnight stay — options and booking:
- GMVN Tent Camp (best option): Heated tents, electric blankets, shared toilets and washing facilities. Managed by GMVN staff who monitor altitude emergencies. ₹1,200–₹2,500/night. Book at gmvnl.com — sells out in May.
- Devasthanam Board Dharamshala: Free to nominal cost. Basic dormitory or small rooms. First-come basis on arrival at the dharamshala office. Good option for solo pilgrims or groups that missed GMVN booking.
- Private guesthouses at Kedarnath: A handful of private operators have basic rooms near the temple complex. ₹800–₹2,000/night. No advance booking — arrive and negotiate. Limited availability during peak weeks.
- Helicopter pilgrims and overnight: If you arrive by helicopter, you can still stay overnight at GMVN tents — book the tent separately from your helicopter ticket. The helicopter allows you to pack a lighter overnight bag (no need to carry it up the 16 km trek).
What NOT to do with Kedarnath accommodation:
- Don't try to reach Gaurikund and start the trek on the same day you travel from Haridwar — you will arrive exhausted and possibly get stuck overnight in Gaurikund (very basic facilities)
- Don't book only Guptkashi and skip the Kedarnath overnight — you'll miss the Pratah Aarti (4 AM), which most pilgrims describe as the single most powerful experience of the entire yatra
- Don't book GMVN Kedarnath tents for June without flexible cancellation — monsoon arrival can cancel your plans at short notice
