Overview
Gangotri and Yamunotri are the two westernmost Char Dham shrines — both in Uttarkashi district, both opening on Akshaya Tritiya (same day), both closing within 2 days of each other. They represent the sources of India's two most sacred rivers: the Yamuna at Yamunotri and the Ganga (Bhagirathi) at Gangotri. Together they form the natural first half of the Char Dham Yatra — the "two rivers" pilgrimage.

Why this pairing works:
(1) Same opening day — you can coordinate both as the start of the Char Dham season. (2) Same district — the Barkot→Uttarkashi→Gangotri road is a natural loop through the Uttarkashi Himalayas. (3) Complementary experiences — Yamunotri demands physical effort (6-km trek); Gangotri is serene road-access. (4) Sacred completion — touching both the Yamuna and Ganga at their mountain sources is one of the most profound acts in the Hindu pilgrimage tradition. (5) Manageable in 5 days from any North Indian city — Delhi, Haridwar, Dehradun or Rishikesh.
Travel Tips
- Do Yamunotri before Gangotri (traditional order): The traditional Char Dham sequence is west to east — Yamunotri (westernmost) before Gangotri. This is also logistically easier: Barkot (Yamunotri) → Uttarkashi → Gangotri follows the geography naturally. The reverse (Gangotri first) is possible but involves backtracking.
- September is the best month for Do Dham: Both Gangotri and Yamunotri in September offer perfect trail conditions, clear skies, post-monsoon beauty and minimal crowds. May has the festive opening energy but highest crowds at both shrines. September strikes the best balance.
- Carry enough cash from Haridwar/Rishikesh: Last reliable ATMs: Barkot (SBI) for the Yamunotri leg; Uttarkashi for the Gangotri leg. Carry ₹8,000–₹12,000 cash per person for the full 5-day Do Dham.
Accommodation
- Night 1 (Barkot): GMVN Barkot (₹1,200–₹2,800) or private hotel (₹700–₹2,500). See Yamunotri hotels.
- Night 2 (Barkot): Same as above.
- Night 3 (Uttarkashi): Private hotels ₹800–₹3,000. Best ATM and medical access of the trip.
- Night 4 (Gangotri or Harsil): GMVN Gangotri/Harsil (₹1,200–₹3,000) or private (₹800–₹2,500). See Gangotri hotels.
