Char Dham Yatra 2026

Char Dham Weather

Complete month-by-month Char Dham weather guide — temperatures, rainfall, snowfall and conditions at Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath during the yatra season (May–November).

Overview

Char Dham weather is one of the most critical factors for planning a successful pilgrimage. Because the circuit spans four different Himalayan shrines at altitudes between 3,048 m (Gangotri) and 3,583 m (Kedarnath), temperatures can be dramatically colder at the temples than at the base towns. The weather also changes rapidly in the mountains — a clear morning can turn into a thunderstorm by afternoon.

The Char Dham Yatra season runs from May to November, when the high mountain passes and temple approaches are free of heavy snow. The season is broadly divided into three phases:

  • Summer (May–June): Cool to cold at altitude, clear mornings, pleasant weather ideal for trekking
  • Monsoon (July–August): Heavy rainfall, landslides on mountain roads, low visibility, slippery trek routes
  • Autumn (September–October): Best weather of the season — clear skies, dry roads, magnificent Himalayan views

How to Reach

Weather conditions directly affect road accessibility on the Char Dham Yatra route. Here's how weather impacts travel at each key point:

  • Haridwar to Rishikesh to Barkot: The lowland section (below 1,500 m) is rarely affected by weather. Even in monsoon, roads are open unless extreme rainfall hits the Yamuna valley.
  • Barkot to Uttarkashi (Gangotri section): During heavy monsoon rains, the Bhagirathi valley section can have rockfalls. Most dangerous in August.
  • Gaurikund to Kedarnath trek: Completely exposed above treeline from km 9 onward. Afternoon thunderstorms July–August make the upper section dangerous. Trek early morning (5:00–6:00 AM start) to complete ascent before 1:00 PM clouds build.
  • Rudraprayag to Badrinath (NH-58): The most landslide-prone section of the Char Dham weather map is between Chamoli and Joshimath. BRO works around the clock but blockages of 6–12 hours are common July–August.

Best Time

Based on Char Dham weather patterns:

Best weather — September to mid-October: The post-monsoon window offers the clearest skies of the entire yatra season. Himalayan peaks are sharply visible from the temple courtyards, the Kedarnath trek route is dry and in good condition, and temperatures at the dhams are cool but comfortable (5°C–15°C days). This is when the Nanda Devi and Kedarnath peaks are most photogenic.

Good weather — May to mid-June: Opening month weather is crisp and exciting. Residual winter snow surrounds Kedarnath and Badrinath temples, creating a stunning white backdrop. Temperatures are cold (-2°C to 10°C at Kedarnath) but manageable with proper gear. Morning visibility is excellent; afternoon clouds build rapidly.

Poor weather — July and August: Monsoon season brings 200–400 mm of rainfall per month at higher altitudes. The Kedarnath trek is slippery and dangerous in heavy rain. Road closures on the Char Dham highway average 10–15 days per month due to landslides. Travel insurance is essential if travelling during this period.

Cold but manageable — late October: A late-October Char Dham Yatra is possible and rewarding but requires heavy winter gear. Kedarnath temples close in late October/early November, and fresh snowfall above 3,000 m is common. The atmosphere is spiritually intense as the closing ceremonies approach.

  • Layers are key: Char Dham weather can swing 15°C–20°C between dawn and midday. Start the Kedarnath trek in full winter gear and strip layers as you warm up climbing.
  • Watch sky, not forecast: Mountain weather forecasts are unreliable for exact timing. Learn to read the sky — cumulus clouds building over peaks by 11 AM signals afternoon rain. Start trekking by 5–6 AM.
  • Altitude + cold = faster dehydration: Drink 3–4 litres of water daily on high-altitude days (Kedarnath, Badrinath). Avoid alcohol — it worsens dehydration and altitude sickness at 3,500 m.
  • Sunburn at altitude: UV radiation is 3× stronger at 3,500 m than at sea level even in cool weather. Apply SPF 50 sunscreen on the Kedarnath trek and at Badrinath.
FAQs
What is the weather like during Char Dham Yatra?
Char Dham weather varies by altitude and season. At Kedarnath (3,583 m), temperatures range from 0°C–12°C in May–June to -5°C nights in October. Gangotri and Badrinath are slightly warmer. July–August bring heavy monsoon rainfall (200–400 mm/month). Base towns like Guptkashi and Uttarkashi are 10°C–15°C warmer than the temple sites.
What is the best time for Char Dham Yatra weather-wise?
The best weather for Char Dham Yatra is September–October — post-monsoon clarity with crystal-clear Himalayan views, dry trek routes and comfortable temperatures (5°C–16°C at the dhams). May–June is the opening season with snow-covered peaks. Avoid July–August (heavy monsoon, landslide risk).
Does it snow during Char Dham Yatra?
Yes. Snowfall at Kedarnath and Badrinath can occur from late October onward. In May (opening season), residual winter snow surrounds the temples — often knee-deep near Kedarnath at opening week. Light snowfall is possible at Gangotri in October. The trek to Kedarnath may have icy patches in early May requiring caution.
