Overview
Gangotri at 3,048 m is the highest of the Char Dham accessible by road. At this altitude, preparation matters — casual visitors who treat it like a plains pilgrimage often struggle. This guide covers every practical aspect of a safe, comfortable and spiritually fulfilling Gangotri Yatra.
Planning
10-step Gangotri Yatra preparation checklist:
- Physical fitness: Gangotri doesn't require trekking but involves walking on uneven temple paths and stepping down to the Bhagirathi ghats. A brisk 30-minute walk daily for 2–3 weeks before the trip is sufficient preparation for healthy adults. For Gaumukh trek (18 km, 844 m ascent), begin 4–6 weeks of cardio training.
- Book in advance: For May–June visits, book GMVN accommodation at gmvnl.in 6–8 weeks in advance. For September, 2–3 weeks is usually sufficient. Confirm private taxi at least 1 week ahead.
- Cash: Last reliable ATM is at Uttarkashi (100 km before Gangotri). Carry ₹4,000–₹6,000 per person in cash from Uttarkashi onwards (accommodation, meals, puja items, horse/doli if needed at Yamunotri if combining).
- Offline maps: Download offline maps at Haridwar — Google Maps, Maps.me or OsmAnd for the entire route. Signal is unreliable above Uttarkashi.
- Warm clothing: Even in May, nights at Gangotri are 4–8°C. In September, nights drop to 2–6°C. A fleece jacket and thermal inner are essential. Layering is the key — mornings are cold (6–10°C), afternoons mild (14–18°C), nights cold again.
- Medications: Basic kit — ibuprofen, paracetamol, antacids, ORS, antiseptic, bandages. If history of altitude sickness: Diamox (acetazolamide) — consult doctor. Nearest hospital: Uttarkashi district hospital (100 km). Gangotri has only a basic health post.
- Acclimatisation: Arrive Uttarkashi (1,158 m) one evening, sleep there, then proceed to Gangotri (3,048 m) next morning. Do not rush directly from Haridwar to Gangotri in one day if you are altitude-sensitive. On arrival at Gangotri, rest for 2–3 hours before temple darshan. Drink water, eat light.
- Photo ID: Aadhaar card or passport required at check posts on NH108. Keep it accessible. Not inside a bag — in a shirt pocket or easy-access compartment.
- Temple rules: No non-vegetarian food or alcohol in Gangotri (100% vegetarian zone). Remove shoes before entering the temple. Photography outside is fine; inside the garbhagriha (sanctum), photography is restricted. Decent dress — traditional kurta or shalwar recommended; shorts and revealing clothing are inappropriate.
- Emergency contacts: Save offline — Uttarkashi district emergency: 01374-222330. SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) Uttarkashi: 9412905401. Gangotri health post: ask at the GMVN desk on arrival for the current contact number.
Travel Tips
- Altitude sickness at Gangotri: At 3,048 m, some pilgrims experience headache, nausea, fatigue and breathlessness — especially on day 1. Prevention: acclimatise at Uttarkashi overnight, drink 3–4 litres of water daily, avoid alcohol, eat light. If symptoms worsen (severe headache, vomiting, confusion), descend immediately to Harsil or Uttarkashi. Do not ignore worsening symptoms at altitude.
- Water at Gangotri: The Bhagirathi river water at Gangotri is considered sacred and is clean at source. Many pilgrims drink directly from the river or Bhagirathi ghats — this is the tradition. For those with sensitive stomachs: use a UV purifier or drink bottled water. Do not rely on taps in guesthouses unless confirmed as filtered.
- Best time for temple darshan (avoid queues): First opening at 6:15 AM has the shortest queue. The queue builds from 9:00 AM–1:00 PM (busiest). After 3:00 PM reopening, another moderate rush. Evening darshan before Sayan Aarti (8:30–9:00 PM) is the most atmospheric — lamps lit, priests chanting, Bhagirathi sounds in the darkness.
