Planning
Route from Haridwar/Rishikesh to Gangotri:
Haridwar → Rishikesh (25 km) → Narendra Nagar (30 km) → Chamba (65 km) → Tehri Dam (80 km) → Dharasu Bend (140 km) → Uttarkashi (165 km) → Bhatwari (200 km) → Gangnani (215 km) → Harsil (241 km) → Gangotri (265 km from Haridwar).

By train + taxi (recommended):
Delhi → Haridwar by overnight train (Dehradun Express 19019, dep New Delhi 21:35, arr Haridwar ~05:00) or Delhi–Haridwar Jan Shatabdi (dep 06:15, arr ~10:30). Travel Tips
- Leave Haridwar/Rishikesh before 6:00 AM: The Gangotri highway has check posts and the mountain section (Uttarkashi to Gangotri) can be slow. Leaving at 5:00–6:00 AM ensures you reach Gangotri in time for morning darshan (6:15 AM opening). Leaving after 9:00 AM means arriving after the noon crowd and possibly missing the best morning queue window.
- Uttarkashi is the last major town: ATMs (SBI, Punjab National Bank), pharmacy, medical clinic, fuel station, mobile recharge — all available at Uttarkashi. Stock up here. The 100 km from Uttarkashi to Gangotri has only basic dhabas.
- Road conditions: NH108 is generally well-maintained but the section above Uttarkashi (especially Bhatwari–Harsil–Gangotri) has some narrow cliff-edge sections. Landslide-prone during monsoon. BRO (Border Roads Organisation) maintains the road year-round in the pilgrim season. Check for blockages at Uttarkashi before proceeding during or after heavy rain.
Accommodation
- Break journey at Uttarkashi: If travelling from Delhi on a single day, overnight at Uttarkashi (165 km from Haridwar, 100 km from Gangotri) and continue to Gangotri next morning. Good hotels ₹800–₹3,000. See hotels guide.
- Break at Harsil: For a more scenic and atmospheric overnight stop, Harsil (24 km from Gangotri) is ideal — GMVN Harsil (₹1,200–₹3,000), private cottages (₹1,500–₹4,000). Beautiful apple orchards and Bhagirathi valley views.
