Overview
Kedarnath (3,583 m) has no direct road access — the final 16 km from Gaurikund is only accessible on foot, by pony or by helicopter. The road journey ends at Sonprayag, from which a government shuttle covers the last 5 km to Gaurikund. This section covers the complete Kedarnath route from all major departure cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Haridwar and Dehradun — to Gaurikund, and then the options for the final leg to the temple.

How to Reach
Route 1 — Kedarnath from Delhi (most common route):
- Delhi → Haridwar: Take the Nanda Devi Express or Shatabdi Express (Departs New Delhi 6:00–6:30 AM, arrives Haridwar 10:30–11:00 AM). Alternatively, Dehradun Shatabdi (stops at Haridwar, 4.5 hrs). Road: NH-58 (240 km, 5–6 hrs). Train is strongly recommended — avoids Delhi–Meerut traffic congestion.
- Haridwar → Guptkashi: Hire a private vehicle from the taxi stand near Haridwar railway station. Shared cabs to Guptkashi: ₹400–₹600/person, depart when full (6–8 pax). Private taxi: ₹5,000–₹8,000 for Innova (capacity 6–7). Route: Haridwar → Rishikesh (24 km) → Devprayag (70 km) → Srinagar (110 km) → Rudraprayag (140 km) → Agastmuni (155 km) → Kund (165 km) → Guptkashi (175 km). 6–7 hrs total.
- Guptkashi → Sonprayag: 40 km, 1–1.5 hrs. Your hotel can arrange drop-off. Or take a shared jeep from Guptkashi bus stand (₹80–₹120/person).
- Sonprayag → Gaurikund: Government-regulated shuttle jeeps only (no private vehicles). ₹35/person, runs from 4:00 AM to evening. 5 km, 20 min.
- Gaurikund → Kedarnath: Trek (16 km, 6–8 hrs), pony (₹3,000–₹5,000), doli/palanquin (₹8,000–₹15,000), or helicopter from Phata helipad (41 km from Sonprayag, 10-min flight, ₹4,500–₹8,000).
Route 2 — Kedarnath from Dehradun / Jolly Grant Airport:
- Fly Delhi → Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport (DED), 45 min. Book IndiGo/Air India.
- Taxi from airport: Dehradun → Guptkashi (200 km, 5–5.5 hrs, ₹5,000–₹7,500). Route: Dehradun → Rishikesh (42 km) → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Guptkashi.
- Or: Dehradun → Phata helipad (160 km, 4.5–5 hrs) → helicopter to Kedarnath (10 min).
Route 3 — Kedarnath from Rishikesh:
- Train to Rishikesh Railway Station (Haridwar is 24 km closer, more trains). Shared taxis from Rishikesh to Guptkashi: ₹350–₹500/person, 7 hrs.
- Private car hire from Rishikesh to Sonprayag: ₹4,500–₹7,000 (Innova), 6–7 hrs.
Route 4 — Kedarnath as part of Char Dham (from Gangotri):
- If visiting Kedarnath after Gangotri (Char Dham sequence), the route is: Uttarkashi → Tehri (via Dharasu, NH-94) → Rudraprayag → Guptkashi. 230 km, 7–8 hrs. Or: Uttarkashi → Dharasu → Lambgaon → Chamba → Rishikesh → Rudraprayag → Guptkashi (longer but mostly NH road). Both routes are mountain roads — allow full day.
Best Time
- May–June: Road conditions are generally good. NH-107 from Rudraprayag to Guptkashi was widened under the Char Dham Mahamarg project (ongoing). Some stretches may still have construction delays in 2026 — add 1 hr buffer. Check BRO road status on bro.gov.in before departure.
- July–August (Monsoon): Frequent road closures on NH-107 (Rudraprayag–Guptkashi section most vulnerable). Check road status daily. Landslides can block the highway for 12–48 hrs. If travelling in monsoon, keep one day's buffer in your itinerary and travel insurance is essential.
- September–October: Post-monsoon roads are repaired and clear. October pre-closing is the best road travel weather — dry, cool, clear.
Travel Tips
- Hire a local Uttarakhand driver: For the Haridwar → Guptkashi → Sonprayag road, hire a driver from Uttarakhand (Garhwal) who knows every bend of the NH-107. Delhi/Punjab/Rajasthan drivers unfamiliar with the mountain road drive more slowly and unsurely, adding 1–2 hrs to the journey. Ask specifically for an "Uttarakhand-experienced" driver when booking.
- No private vehicles beyond Sonprayag: This is strictly enforced. Only government shuttle jeeps run between Sonprayag and Gaurikund. Do not attempt to drive beyond Sonprayag — you will be turned back at the checkpoint. Drop your vehicle/driver at Sonprayag and take the shuttle.
- Mobile signal: Good in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Devprayag and Guptkashi (Jio and Airtel). Signal drops significantly in the Rudraprayag gorge sections and between Agastmuni and Sonprayag. No reliable mobile signal at Gaurikund and on the Kedarnath trek above Rambara. Kedarnath itself has limited BSNL signal. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) for the entire route before leaving Haridwar.
- Fuel up at Rudraprayag: The last reliable petrol station before the pilgrimage zone is at Rudraprayag (or Augustmuni). Fill your tank there — the mountain section to Guptkashi and Sonprayag has very limited fuel availability.
- Sonprayag parking: If you've hired your own vehicle from Delhi or Haridwar, it parks at Sonprayag (government parking, nominal fee). Arrange with your driver to wait there or return on a specific day for your pickup.
