Best Time to Visit
Uttarakhand is a year-round destination — but the best time varies significantly by activity and location:
- March–June (Summer / Pre-Monsoon): Best for Char Dham Yatra (opens Apr–May), Rishikesh rafting, Auli skiing (Feb–Mar), hill station trips (Mussoorie, Nainital). Temperatures: 5°C–25°C at altitude, 20°C–35°C at valleys. Most popular season — book 30–60 days ahead.
- July–August (Monsoon): Heavy rains in Garhwal (1,000–2,000 mm). High landslide risk on mountain roads. Valley of Flowers opens (its only season, Jul–Sep). Rishikesh rafting suspended. Char Dham remains open but conditions difficult. Best avoided for mountain travel by most visitors.
- September–November (Post-Monsoon — Best Overall): The single best season for Uttarakhand. Crystal-clear skies, best Himalayan views, dry trekking trails, mild temperatures (0°C–20°C). Char Dham closing ceremonies (Oct). Great for photography, trekking, wildlife safari. Moderate crowds compared to May–June.
- December–February (Winter): Snow at altitude. Auli skiing (Jan–Mar). Haridwar and Rishikesh are pleasant (10°C–20°C). Char Dham temples closed. Good for Kumaon (Ranikhet, Almora, Munsiyari snow views). Low tourist season — good discounts.
