The Chaukhamba Reflection Lake

Deoria Tal

Deoria Tal is a high-altitude lake at 2,438m in Rudraprayag district — famous for the reflection of the Chaukhamba massif (6,854m, the twin peaks of the Badrinath range) in the still water at dawn. A 3.5-km trek from Sari village reaches the lake in 2 hours. The lake is on the Chopta circuit and makes an excellent addition to the Tungnath–Chandrashila trek.

The Lake & Trek

Chaukhamba reflection at dawn: The primary experience of Deoria Tal — on a clear morning (best October–November and March–April), the Chaukhamba peaks (6,854m) and the surrounding Garhwal snow range reflect perfectly in the still lake surface. This is one of the most photographed Himalayan reflections in India. The reflection is clearest from 5:30–7:30 am before the morning breeze disturbs the water surface.

Trek from Sari village (3.5 km, 580m gain): The trek to Deoria Tal from Sari village (1,850m) is 3.5 km through dense oak and rhododendron forest, gaining 580m. The trail is well-maintained with stone steps in sections. Time: 1.5–2 hours up. Mules available from Sari for those who cannot walk.

Camping at Deoria Tal: Forest department–permitted camping at the lake edge — several camp operators from Ukhimath set up tents at the lake. Overnight camping for the pre-dawn Chaukhamba reflection is the recommended approach. ₹1,000–₂,₀₀₀/person (tents, meals, bonfire). Forest camping fee: ₹50/night.

Combine with Chopta–Tungnath: Deoria Tal and Chopta are 12 km apart — the standard circuit: Rishikesh → Sari → Deoria Tal (overnight) → Chopta → Tungnath–Chandrashila → return. This 3-day circuit is one of the finest short Garhwal itineraries.

Budget, Camping & Travel Tips
  • Best time: October–November (clearest reflection, Chaukhamba snow white and bright). March–April (rhododendron in bloom on the trail). Avoid July–August (monsoon, muddy trail, views closed).
  • Go early: The Chaukhamba reflection at Deoria Tal is a pre-dawn activity — the lake must be still (no breeze) and the sky cloudless. This means camping the previous evening at the lake, then rising at 5 am for the reflection window (5:30–7:30 am).
  • Forest permit: Deoria Tal is inside the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary buffer zone. Entry fee: ₹150/person. The camp operators handle the permits.
FAQs
When is the best time for the Chaukhamba reflection at Deoria Tal?
October–November — the sky is clearest after monsoon, the Chaukhamba peaks are freshly snow-covered (maximum reflectivity), and the temperature difference between the cold night and warm morning creates the mirror-calm lake surface. The reflection window is 5:30–7:30 am before the morning sun heats the air and creates a breeze. March–April is the second-best window. The reflection is impossible in monsoon (overcast skies) and unreliable in December–February (variable weather, the lake may have ice at the edges that breaks the reflection).
