Overview
Gangotri is open from late April to early November (~195 days). The quality of experience varies enormously by month. September consistently delivers the best combination of weather, crowd levels, cost and road conditions. May is excellent for those who want the opening-season energy. Both are far superior to the monsoon months (July–August).

Planning
September (recommended):
The Bhagirathi valley in September is at its most spectacular. The monsoon washes the atmosphere clean — visibility on a clear September day can reveal peaks 100 km away. Shivling (6,543 m), Thalay Sagar (6,904 m) and the entire Gangotri massif stand in razor-sharp clarity above the valley. The Bhagirathi runs clear and fast — the water is visibly cleaner than any other month. Forest around Harsil and Gangotri begins turning colour. Roads are in excellent condition after the monsoon repair teams have worked through September. Gaumukh trek is ideal — stable moraines, no residual monsoon ice, excellent glacier photography conditions. Plan: 4–5 days from Haridwar, September 5–25 as the sweet spot (after schools resume and before Navratri rush).
May (good, but crowded):
May has its own magic — the season just opened after six months of closure, the priests return from their winter homes, and the Akhand Jyoti (eternal flame) is re-lit. Fresh snow fields are visible above 4,000 m. The opening week (late April–first week of May) is particularly atmospheric — many pilgrims specifically time their visit for the kapaat (door opening) ceremony. Practically: expect peak crowds, 45–90 minute darshan queues, premium hotel prices and heavy booking pressure on taxis and buses. Book 8–10 weeks ahead for May.
Gaumukh trek timing:
Gaumukh glacier (18 km from Gangotri, 3,892 m) is a separate overnight trek requiring a forest department permit (₹150 Indian, ₹600 foreign, issued at Gangotri). Best months: September (prime, dry, clear), May–June (dramatic snowscapes). Trek closed July–August (forest department orders). October is possible but early snowfall risk above 4,000 m. The 18 km trail to Gaumukh takes 6–7 hours one way; overnight camping at Bhojbasa (14 km, 3,792 m).
Travel Tips
- Avoid school holidays in May for fewer crowds: Indian school summer holidays (May 15 – June 15 approximately) drive the peak Gangotri crowd. If visiting in May, aim for May 1–15 (before holidays) for slightly better conditions.
- September 5–20 is the golden window: After schools resume (post-August) and before the Navratri holiday rush (usually late September–early October), this 15-day window offers the fewest crowds of the entire season with ideal weather.
- Char Dham circuit timing: The optimal Char Dham circuit (Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath) runs best in September when all four temples are open and all four highways are in good condition. A September Char Dham is the best value and experience. See Char Dham guide.
Accommodation
- September rates: Gangotri guesthouses ₹600–₹1,500 (May equivalent ₹800–₹2,000). Harsil GMVN ₹1,000–₹2,500 (May ₹1,500–₹3,500). Uttarkashi hotels ₹700–₹2,500 (May same). September has much better availability — you can often book 2–3 days in advance vs 8 weeks in May.
- May — book way ahead: GMVN properties at Gangotri and Harsil sell out in May 6–8 weeks before the date. Book at gmvnl.in as soon as your dates are confirmed.
FAQs
- Which is the best month to visit Gangotri?
- September ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — crystal clear skies, best views of Shivling and Gangotri massif, dry roads, 20–25% cheaper than May, 15–25 min darshan queues vs 45–90 min in May. Gaumukh trek in best condition. All facilities open.
- Can I visit Gangotri in October?
- Yes — first half of October is excellent. Autumn colours, dramatic light, cold nights (−3 to 3°C). Temple open until ~8 November. Avoid late October (early winter, some guesthouses close, Gaumukh trek closes). Pack proper winter gear for October.
- Is May or September better for Gangotri?
- September wins on weather clarity, cost (20–25% cheaper), crowds (30–40% fewer) and queue times. May wins on opening-season energy, fresh snow views and auspicious Akshaya Tritiya timing. Most experienced pilgrims choose September; first-timers often prefer May.
