Overview
Gangotri temple closes on Diwali (Kartik Amavasya) each year — approximately 8 November 2026. This makes Gangotri the first Char Dham to close each season. After closing, the goddess's idol travels to Mukhba village (Harsil area) for the winter, and Gangotri town is completely abandoned under deep snow until the following April.

Planning
The Diwali closing ceremony:
The closing ceremony at Gangotri on Diwali is an emotionally charged ritual. After the final darshan and a special puja, the Gangotri Devi idol is dressed in winter garments, placed in a ceremonial palanquin (doli), and the kapaat (temple doors) are formally closed with Vedic mantras. The idol then begins its 2–3 day procession journey to Mukhba village via the Bhagirathi valley. The closing ceremony is attended by hundreds of devotees and the accompanying priests. The sound of dhol and nagara (traditional drums) accompanies the procession as it departs Gangotri town.
October — the last good month:
The best strategy for a late-season Gangotri visit is early-to-mid October. Weather is still manageable (4–12°C days), autumn colours are at their peak in the Harsil forest, the Bhagirathi flows clear and fast, and the Gangotri massif and Shivling are clearly visible. The temple is open with moderate crowds. This is a beautiful, serene time — the year's last pilgrims trickle through, the priests are in a contemplative mood, and the mountains feel close. After October 20, temperatures drop sharply and facilities begin closing.
Travel Tips
- Last recommended date for Gangotri: 20 October 2026: For a comfortable visit with all facilities available, plan to be at Gangotri no later than 20 October. After this date: increasing cold, facility closures, possible early snowfall and fewer transport options.
- Attending the Diwali closing (8 November): A rare and beautiful experience. Travel to Gangotri 2–3 days before Diwali (5–6 November). Nights will be -5 to -8°C — bring serious winter gear (down jacket, thermal pants, warm hat and gloves). Very few facilities available — carry food supplies and confirm accommodation availability well in advance.
Accommodation
- October accommodation (limited): Many Gangotri guesthouses close after first October week. GMVN Tourist Rest House stays open until ~15 October. After 15 October, Harsil (24 km before Gangotri) is a better base. See hotels guide.
