Overview
Gangotri temple operates on a strict seasonal calendar determined by the Hindu lunar calendar. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (Vaishakh Shukla Tritiya) in late April and closes on Diwali (Kartik Amavasya) in October–November. Both dates move by 1–2 weeks each year as the Hindu lunar calendar shifts relative to the Gregorian calendar.

Planning
The Kapaat (door) opening ceremony:
On Akshaya Tritiya morning, the Gangotri Devi idol is brought back from Mukhba village in a ceremonial procession — a journey of 48 km through the Bhagirathi valley. The procession is accompanied by priests, temple musicians (dhol-damau players) and thousands of devotees who line the route. The idol arrives at Gangotri temple typically in the afternoon and the kapaat (temple doors) are formally opened with Vedic rituals, the lighting of the Akhand Jyoti, and the first darshan of the season. The opening day draws the largest single-day crowd at Gangotri — often 5,000–8,000 pilgrims.
Gangotri and Yamunotri open on the same day:
Both Gangotri and Yamunotri open on Akshaya Tritiya — the same auspicious day. This allows pilgrims doing the full Char Dham Yatra to plan a coordinated visit: Yamunotri first (1 day), then Gangotri (1–2 days), then Kedarnath (2–3 days), then Badrinath (1–2 days). The Char Dham Yatra is typically undertaken west to east — Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath — which is also the geographic order from west to east through Uttarakhand.
Closing ceremony (Diwali):
On Diwali day, after the final darshan and evening puja, the Gangotri Devi idol is dressed in winter garments, placed in a ceremonial palanquin and carried out of the temple to begin the procession to Mukhba. The temple doors are closed for the winter after the idol departs. The Diwali closing is a significant emotional event — many pilgrims travel specifically to witness the final kapaat closing and bid farewell to the goddess before winter.
Travel Tips
- Book 8–10 weeks ahead if visiting the opening week: Akshaya Tritiya and the first two weeks of May draw the season's highest crowds. All accommodation in Gangotri, Harsil and even Uttarkashi fills 8–10 weeks in advance. Book GMVN properties at gmvnl.in and private guesthouses directly as soon as your dates are confirmed.
- Confirm the exact 2026 date: The estimated date (~26 April) is based on the Akshaya Tritiya lunar calendar calculation. The official date is confirmed by the Gangotri temple committee and announced in March 2026. Check gangotridham.in (official Gangotri temple website) or uttarakhandtourism.gov.in for the confirmed date closer to the season.
- Visit Mukhba in winter: If you are in Uttarkashi during the winter months (November–April), Mukhba village (near Harsil) is accessible and you can receive darshan of Gangotri Devi at her winter abode. A serene, uncrowded experience — far removed from the peak pilgrimage rush. The Mukhba temple and the Harsil valley in winter are extraordinarily beautiful.
Accommodation
- Opening week accommodation in Gangotri: Very limited — GMVN Tourist Rest House (₹1,200–₹2,500, book at gmvnl.in), private guesthouses (₹800–₹2,000). Total capacity in Gangotri town is 300–400 rooms. Book months ahead for opening week. Harsil (24 km before) has better availability as an overflow base.
- Mukhba winter visit (Nov–Apr): No commercial hotels at Mukhba. Basic dharamshala accommodation available. Harsil GMVN (25 km) is the nearest proper accommodation. See hotels guide.
