Overview

Badrinath (3,133 m, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand) is one of the holiest Hindu shrines in India — the northern Char Dham, the abode of Lord Vishnu (Badri Vishal), and the destination of millions of pilgrims annually. The temple is open from approximately late April to mid-November each year. Motor road access goes all the way — no trekking required. This complete guide covers every aspect of planning a Badrinath Yatra in 2026.

Planning

Step 1 — Register (mandatory, free):
Before anything else, register at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. Free, takes 5–10 minutes. You receive a PDF slip with QR code — show at all highway check posts. Without registration, you will be turned back. See registration complete guide.

Step 2 — Choose your dates:
Best time: September (clear skies after monsoon, 20–30% cheaper, short darshan queues). Avoid July–August (monsoon, landslide risk). May is pleasant but crowded and expensive. October is beautiful but cold at night. See best time to visit guide.

Step 3 — Book accommodation:
Base: Joshimath (1,890 m, 50 km before Badrinath) for acclimatisation. GMVN, mid-range hotels ₹700–₹4,000. Also book 1 night in Badrinath if attending Sayan Aarti or Mahabhishek. See hotels guide.

Step 4 — Book Mahabhishek (optional but highly recommended):
Book at badrikedar.org → Puja Booking → Mahabhishek. 4:30 AM, max 8 persons, ₹2,500–₹4,000. Book 7–10 days ahead in May–June, 2–3 days in September. See aarti and puja guide.

Step 5 — Plan your Badrinath day:

  • 4:30 AM — Mahabhishek (if booked) at temple inner sanctum
  • 5:00 AM — Tapt Kund bath (45°C sacred hot spring, 100 m from temple)
  • 6:00 AM — First morning darshan (shortest queue)
  • 8:00 AM — Breakfast + walk to Brahma Kapal (800 m, pind daan)
  • 9:30 AM — Auto-rickshaw to Mana Village (3 km, ₹150, last Indian village)
  • 11:30 AM — Return from Mana, lunch in Badrinath town
  • 3:30 PM — Second darshan session opens
  • 7:30 PM — Dhoopaarti (incense aarti)
  • 8:30 PM — Sayan Aarti (grand closing ceremony, 20–25 min)

Travel Tips

  • Acclimatise at Joshimath (1,890 m) for 1 night before Badrinath: Badrinath is at 3,133 m — a significant altitude for most visitors from the plains. Spending 1 night in Joshimath (1,890 m) lets your body adjust before the final 50 km drive to Badrinath. Signs of AMS (altitude mountain sickness): headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue. If you feel these in Joshimath, rest for another day before ascending. Never ignore AMS symptoms in the mountains.
  • Withdraw cash at Rishikesh or Haridwar: No reliable ATM at Badrinath. Last reliable ATM: Joshimath. Withdraw ₹5,000–₹8,000 per person at Rishikesh/Haridwar. UPI works in Joshimath but not reliably above it.
  • Download everything offline before Joshimath: Your registration PDF, hotel booking confirmations, Google Maps offline (Badrinath region), Maps.me (offline). Mobile connectivity is weak between Joshimath and Badrinath on most networks (BSNL is best).
  • September is the sweet spot: Clear views, dry roads, 20–30% cheaper hotels and taxis, 10–15 minute darshan queues vs 1–2 hours in May. Valley of Flowers closes August-end — time your Valley of Flowers extension for July–August. Badrinath darshan is best in September.

FAQs
What is the ideal number of days for Badrinath Yatra?
4–5 days from Rishikesh (5–6 from Delhi). Minimum: Day 1 Rishikesh→Joshimath, Day 2 acclimatise, Day 3 Badrinath full day, Day 4 return. Ideal: add 1 night at Badrinath for Sayan Aarti + dawn Mahabhishek. The most common mistake is attempting a same-day trip from Rishikesh — 295 km mountain roads, 8–9 hours one way.
What is the complete checklist for Badrinath Yatra?
Registration slip (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in), Aadhaar/ID original, ₹5,000–₹8,000 cash (no ATM at Badrinath), warm layers + rain jacket, offline maps + registration PDF downloaded, GMVN/hotel booking, Mahabhishek puja booked (badrikedar.org) if desired. Medical: altitude sickness prep, personal medications, doctor certificate (advisory for 50+).
Can Badrinath be covered in one day from Rishikesh?
Technically yes — not recommended. 295 km, 8–9 hrs one way on mountain roads. Same-day trip means: leave 2 AM, arrive 11 AM, 2–3 hrs at temple, return midnight — exhausting and dangerous. You miss Sayan Aarti, Tapt Kund, Brahma Kapal, Mana Village and Mahabhishek. Minimum: 1 night Joshimath + 1 night Badrinath.
