Complete Brahmatal Trek Guide
Trek Details & Route
6-day circuit (base: Lohajung, 2,360m):
Day 1: Lohajung → Bekaltal (2,940m) — 6 km through oak and rhododendron forest (snow-covered in winter).
Day 2: Bekaltal → Brahmatal (3,852m) — 5 km across open snowfield. Lake in winter: frozen solid.
Day 3: Brahmatal → summit ridge (3,960m) — optional 1 km extension for full Trishul panorama. Return to Brahmatal camp.
Day 4: Brahmatal → Tilandi (3,660m) — alternate route through high meadows.
Days 5–6: Tilandi → Wan village → Lohajung via bus.
Brahmatal Lake (3,852m) in winter: The frozen lake is the centerpiece — the ice surface reflects Trishul and Nanda Ghunti peaks when there is partial surface snow. The stillness of the frozen lake in the snowfield, surrounded by the Trishul massif, is among the most visually striking scenes on any accessible Himalayan trek.
Bekaltal Lake (2,940m): The first night's camp — a smaller lake at 2,940m surrounded by forest. Also freezes in winter. The forest camp beside the frozen lake is one of the most atmospheric night halts on the trek.
Trishul view from summit ridge: The optional extension to the Brahmatal summit ridge (3,960m) gives a complete view of the Trishul massif — all three Trishul peaks (7,120m, 6,690m, 6,007m) arranged in a trident shape, plus Nanda Ghunti and the back side of the Ali–Bedni bugyal complex (Roopkund area).
How to Reach Brahmatal
| Origin | Distance to Lohajung | Time |

How to Reach Brahmatal
Drive to Lohajung (226 km from Rishikesh via Tharali–Dewal, 7 hrs). Taxis from Tharali to Lohajung: ₹1,200–₁,₅₀₀. Note: Lohajung is also the base for the Roopkund trek — the same approach road serves both.
Difficulty, Best Time & Tips
- Best time: December–March (frozen lakes, deep snow on trail, Trishul view spectacular in clear winter air). The trek in summer (May–June) accesses the same lakes in melted state and green meadows.
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. No technical terrain — no crampons required (unlike Kedarkantha in January). Well-marked trail with GMVN rest houses at each camp. Suitable for fit beginners. Altitude (3,852m) requires acclimatisation — spend extra time at Bekaltal if altitude symptomatic.
- Why Brahmatal over Kedarkantha: Brahmatal is less commercial than Kedarkantha (fewer operators, smaller groups) and the lake landscape (frozen lakes in snow) is different from the forest/summit character of Kedarkantha. Both are valid; choose by which setting appeals more.
FAQs
- Can I do Brahmatal in winter without prior trekking experience?
- Yes — Brahmatal is frequently done by first-time winter trekkers. The trail is non-technical, the camps are established (not wild camping), and the elevation gain is gradual. Go with an organised operator who provides sleeping bags rated to -10°C, insulated mattresses and emergency protocols. Physical preparation (cardio fitness equivalent to walking 8–10 km daily for 2 weeks before the trek) makes the experience more enjoyable. Altitude: 3,852m — drink water, avoid alcohol, ascend slowly and you will be fine.
