Planning
Barkot — the recommended base:
Barkot (1,220 m) is on the Tons river — a pleasant town with a proper infrastructure for Yamunotri pilgrims. GMVN Tourist Rest House Barkot (gmvnl.in, ₹1,200–₹2,800) is the most reliable option: clean rooms, attached bathroom, hot water, restaurant and a pleasant garden facing the Tons valley. Private hotels: Hotel Yamuna View, Hotel Sukhdev Palace and several others (₹700–₹2,500). SBI ATM in Barkot — the last reliable ATM before Janki Chatti. From Barkot: drive 30–45 min to Janki Chatti in the morning (13 km, shared taxi ₹50–₹100 or private ₹300–₹500).
Janki Chatti — for the early starter:
If you want to be on the Yamunotri trail by 6:00–6:30 AM without a morning drive, stay at Janki Chatti (2,650 m). Accommodation: guesthouses and dharamshalas ₹400–₹1,000. Basic rooms, often shared bathrooms, minimal amenities. The advantage is being right at the trek start — especially useful for pilgrims doing the trek in May when the trail is most congested and an early start makes the difference. Disadvantage: no ATM, very limited food options, cold (2,650 m vs Barkot's 1,220 m).
