- Traditional modest attire strongly recommended: kurta-pyjama or salwar kameez for women; kurta or clean shirt + trousers for men. - Is the Gaumukh trek open in monsoon (July–August)?
- Usually closed July–August due to monsoon-related rockfall and landslide risk on the moraine sections. Permit issuance is suspended or severely restricted. Confirm at the Forest Office on arrival. Best seasons: May–June and September–October.
Registration & Char Dham
- Is Char Dham registration required for Gangotri?
- Yes — register at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in (free, online). Required for all Char Dham (Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath). Carry your registration QR code — may be checked at check posts. Registration does not guarantee specific time-slot darshan at Gangotri.
- In what order should I do the Char Dham Yatra?
- Traditional west-to-east order: Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath. Yamunotri (westernmost, source of Yamuna) → Gangotri (source of Ganga) → Kedarnath (Shiva) → Badrinath (Vishnu). Gangotri and Yamunotri both open on Akshaya Tritiya so starting with Yamunotri on opening day, then moving to Gangotri works perfectly.
