Birthplace of Ganesha — Alpine Lake Trek

Dodital

Dodital is a pristine alpine lake at 3,307m in the Uttarkashi district — considered the birthplace of Lord Ganesha (Dodi = Ganapati in local Garhwali) and home to the golden mahseer, a rare and protected freshwater fish. The 4-day trek from Sangam Chatti passes through deodar and rhododendron forest to the clear lake, with the option to continue to Darwa Pass (4,140m) for Himalayan views.

Complete Dodital Trek Guide

Trek Details & Route

4-day trek (base: Sangam Chatti, 1,600m):
Day 1: Sangam Chatti (1,600m) → Agoda (2,300m) — 7 km, 4 hrs through deodar forest.
Day 2: Agoda → Dodital Lake (3,307m) — 7 km, 5 hrs. Alpine meadow and the lake.
Day 3: Dodital → Darwa Pass (4,140m) → Dodital — 8 km, 5 hrs round trip. Himalayan panorama from the pass. Optional: continue to Hanuman Chatti (Yamunotri route).
Day 4: Dodital → Sangam Chatti — descent 14 km, 6 hrs.

Dodital Lake (3,307m): A clear, cold alpine lake 500m long — crystal transparent water over the rocky bottom. The golden mahseer (a large freshwater fish, protected) is visible in the shallows. The Ganesha temple on the lake edge is simple but ancient. The lake is surrounded by birch, oak and rhododendron — in April the rhododendron bloom overhangs the water. The silence and the forest lake atmosphere are excellent.

Darwa Pass (4,140m): The high point of the trek — a mountain pass with a panoramic view of the Bandarpunch range (6,316m), Gangotri range and the Kedarnath range. The pass connects the Asi Ganga valley (Sangam Chatti side) with the Bhilangana and Hanuman Chatti valley. Cross the pass to access the Hanuman Chatti–Yamunotri pilgrimage route.

Golden mahseer (protected fish): The lake has a population of golden mahseer — a large, golden-scaled freshwater fish, one of India's most prized sport fish but now protected at Dodital. Viewing (not fishing) of the mahseer in the clear shallows is an unusual wildlife experience. Photography is excellent in morning light.

Budget, Best Time & Tips
  • Best time: May–June (rhododendron bloom on lower sections, mild lake weather, Darwa Pass open). September–October (post-monsoon clarity, best lake reflection). Avoid July–August (trail muddy, leeches).
  • Fishing is prohibited: The golden mahseer at Dodital is protected — fishing is strictly banned. This is enforced and fines are substantial. Come to observe the fish, not to catch them.
  • Combine with Dayara Bugyal: Sangam Chatti (Dodital base) and Barsu/Raithal (Dayara Bugyal base) are both near Uttarkashi — combine both treks in 6–7 days from Uttarkashi for a complete Uttarkashi trekking experience.
FAQs
Why is Dodital considered the birthplace of Ganesha?
Local Garhwali tradition holds that Lord Ganesha was born at Dodital — the name "Dodital" derives from "Dodi" (the local name for Ganesha) and "Tal" (lake). The Ganesha temple on the lake shore is ancient and pilgrims from the surrounding villages visit during specific festivals. The sacred status of the lake is also the reason the golden mahseer is protected here — the fish are considered sacred by the local community and cannot be harmed. The confluence of the religious significance, the protected wildlife and the alpine setting makes Dodital unusually meaningful as a trekking destination.
