Overview
Kedarnath (3,583 m / 11,755 ft) is Lord Shiva's most powerful Himalayan abode — a Jyotirlinga that draws over 10 lakh pilgrims every season and sits at the head of the Mandakini valley, ringed by some of the most dramatic Himalayan terrain accessible to pilgrims. The Kedarnath temple is believed to be 1,200+ years old in its current stone form, constructed or restored by Adi Shankaracharya after the Pandavas originally built a shrine here in the Dvapara Yuga.
Unlike the other three Char Dhams which are road-accessible, Kedarnath Yatra requires either the 16 km Gaurikund–Kedarnath trek or a helicopter flight. This physical effort is considered part of the pilgrimage. The temple is surrounded by snow for much of the year — even at peak season (May–June), the Kedarnath glacier and Chorabari tal (Gandhi Sarovar) above the temple are snow-covered. The combination of extreme altitude, physical effort, ancient temple and Himalayan grandeur makes Kedarnath unlike any other pilgrimage destination in India.

How to Reach
The journey to Kedarnath ends where the road ends — at Sonprayag (1,829 m), from which a government-operated shuttle (shared jeep) takes pilgrims 5 km to Gaurikund (1,982 m), the actual trek starting point. No private vehicles are allowed beyond Sonprayag.
- From Haridwar (by road): Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Agastmuni → Guptkashi → Sonprayag. 225 km, 7–9 hrs. The NH-107 road beyond Rudraprayag is a mountain highway — drive carefully or hire an experienced local driver.
- By train to nearest railhead: The nearest railway stations are Rishikesh (216 km from Sonprayag) and Dehradun (250 km). From Rishikesh, shared taxis and buses to Guptkashi (7 hrs) are available.
- By air: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (250 km from Sonprayag). Taxi from Dehradun to Guptkashi: 5–6 hrs.
- Helicopter to Kedarnath: Helipads at Phata (41 km from Sonprayag), Guptkashi (35 km) and Sirsi — 10–15 min flight to Kedarnath helipad. One of the most popular ways to avoid the 16 km trek. See Kedarnath helicopter guide.
Best Time
- May (Opening — Most Popular): Opening week (late April/early May) is the highest demand. Snow-covered landscape, freshly cleansed trail. Cold (0°C–8°C at Kedarnath), possible snowfall. Maximum spiritual significance — opening ceremony draws massive crowds. Book 60–90 days ahead.
- June (Pre-Monsoon — Very Good): Temperatures slightly warmer (2°C–12°C), snow receding. Rhododendrons still blooming in lower valleys. Moderate crowds, good availability. Rain begins toward late June — pack a rain jacket.
- September (Post-Monsoon — Best for Clarity): Ideal month for Kedarnath. Crystal-clear views of Kedarnath peak, Chorabari glacier glistening, moderate weather (0°C–10°C). Fewer pilgrims than May peak. Trek trail is well-maintained. Highly recommended.
- October (Pre-Closing — Special): Bhai Dooj closing ceremony (usually 3rd week of October) is a deeply moving event — the deity is ceremonially moved to Ukhimath for winter. Cold (−5°C to 5°C), snow possible, but a unique experience. Warm gear mandatory.
- Avoid July–August: Monsoon brings heavy rain (trek is dangerously slippery), frequent landslides on approach roads, river flooding and high risk of trip disruption. Kedarnath remains open but is not recommended without expert local guidance.
Travel Tips
- Arrive at Gaurikund by 5:00 AM: The 16 km trek takes 6–8 hrs. Starting before sunrise avoids afternoon rain showers and crowd congestion at the temple during peak darshan hours (10 AM–1 PM). Pre-book an early breakfast at your Guptkashi hotel (5:00–5:30 AM).
- Altitude preparation matters: Kedarnath at 3,583 m can cause mild altitude sickness in those who ascend too quickly. Spend one night at Guptkashi (1,319 m) before trekking. Drink 3–4 litres of water daily. Avoid alcohol. Consult your doctor about Diamox if you have cardiac or respiratory conditions.
- Registration is mandatory: Biometric Char Dham registration at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in is required for entry. Carry the printed slip and matching photo ID. No registration = no entry beyond Sonprayag check post.
- Daily pilgrim cap: The Uttarakhand government imposes a daily cap of approximately 12,000–15,000 pilgrims at Kedarnath. Slots fill very quickly during peak May weeks — register and receive your timed entry pass in advance.
- Stay overnight if physically able: One night at Kedarnath temple gives you access to the Sandhya Aarti (sunset ritual), Shayyya Aarti (bedtime ritual), Pratah Aarti (4:00 AM, most sacred) and Abhishek puja — experiences impossible on a day-trip.
- Ponies and dolis: Pony service from Gaurikund to Kedarnath costs ₹3,000–₹5,000 (advance booking recommended). Doli (palanquin) is available for those who cannot walk or ride — ₹8,000–₹15,000, carried by 4 porters.
