Gangotri Itinerary 2026

Gangotri itinerary options — 2N/3D quick pilgrimage, 3N/4D with Gaumukh trek, 4N/5D Gangotri + Yamunotri Do Dham and 7-day plan with all highlights.

Overview

Choose your Gangotri itinerary based on available time. The minimum recommended is 2 nights (3 days) from Haridwar to experience Gangotri properly — including Sayan Aarti, dawn darshan and the atmosphere of the town. Anything less is rushed and misses the point of the pilgrimage.

Planning

Plan A — 2N/3D Quick Gangotri Yatra:
Day 1 (Drive): Haridwar 05:00 AM → Rishikesh → Chamba → Tehri → Uttarkashi (165 km, arrive ~12:00 PM). Lunch, check-in. Afternoon: explore Uttarkashi town, visit Vishwanath temple, withdraw cash. Overnight Uttarkashi.
Day 2 (Gangotri): Uttarkashi 07:00 AM → Bhatwari → Gangnani (hot spring stop 20 min) → Harsil (viewpoint) → Gangotri (arrive 11:00 AM, 100 km, 3 hrs). Check in. Lunch. 12:00–2:00 PM darshan (avoid the noon rush if possible — try to arrive before 11:30 AM for a shorter queue). 2:00–3:00 PM: rest/acclimatise. 3:00 PM: Bhagirathi ghat — sacred dip, sip water from the Bhagirathi. 4:00 PM: walk to Gaumukh trail start (1–2 km viewpoint). 6:00 PM: explore Gangotri town, buy prasad. 9:00 PM: Sayan Aarti. Overnight Gangotri or Harsil.
Day 3 (Return): 6:15 AM darshan (dawn, shortest queue, best atmosphere). 8:00 AM: breakfast. 9:00 AM departure → Haridwar (265 km, arrive 5:00–6:00 PM).

Plan B — 3N/4D Gangotri + Gaumukh Trek:
Days 1–2: Same as Plan A above. Day 2 overnight: Gangotri town (must stay in Gangotri — Gaumukh trek starts here).
Day 3 (Gaumukh Trek): Obtain forest permit at Forest Office (opens 6:00 AM, ₹150 Indian, limited to 150/day). Start trek 7:00 AM. Gangotri → Chirbasa (3,600 m, 9 km, 3 hrs) → Bhojbasa (3,775 m, 14 km, 2 hrs more) → Gaumukh glacier (3,892 m, 18 km, 1.5 hrs more). At Gaumukh: touch the glacier, collect the sacred Ganga water at source. Trek back to Gangotri (5–6 hrs return). Arrive Gangotri ~7:00 PM. Dinner and overnight Gangotri.
Day 4: Morning darshan → return Haridwar.

Plan C — 4N/5D Do Dham (Yamunotri + Gangotri):
Day 1: Haridwar → Barkot (176 km, 5–6 hrs, Yamuna valley). Overnight Barkot.
Day 2: Barkot → Janki Chatti (13 km) → Yamunotri trek (6 km, 2–3 hrs ascent). Surya Kund darshan, Divya Shila, temple darshan. Trek down (2 hrs). Return Barkot. Overnight.
Day 3: Barkot → Uttarkashi (120 km, 3–4 hrs). Overnight.
Day 4: Uttarkashi → Gangotri darshan + Sayan Aarti. Overnight Gangotri.
Day 5: Dawn darshan → Haridwar.

Travel Tips

  • Always overnight at Uttarkashi before Gangotri: The altitude jump from Haridwar (314 m) to Gangotri (3,048 m) in a single day is too aggressive — especially for first-time high-altitude visitors. Sleeping at Uttarkashi (1,158 m) gives your body a 24-hour acclimatisation step that dramatically reduces headaches and fatigue at Gangotri.
  • Don't over-schedule Day 2: Arrive Gangotri by 11:00 AM, do one good darshan, then rest. Many visitors make the mistake of rushing from the car straight to the temple queue after 6 hours of mountain driving — rest first, temple second. Your darshan is much better when you're not exhausted.
  • Gaumukh permit: arrive early: Forest office opens 6:00 AM. Only 150 permits per day. Arrive by 6:30 AM at the latest in May (popular season). September: permits rarely run out, 8:00 AM is fine.
Accommodation
  • Night 1 (Uttarkashi): Hotels ₹800–₹3,000. Good ATM access here — last cash withdrawal point.
  • Night 2 (Gangotri or Harsil): GMVN (₹1,200–₹3,000) or guesthouses (₹600–₹2,000). Book ahead for May.
  • Night 3 if Gaumukh: Stay in Gangotri (same guesthouse). Bhojbasa if camping (Lal Baba Ashram, basic rooms).
FAQs
What is the best itinerary for Gangotri Yatra?
2N/3D from Haridwar: Day 1 Haridwar→Uttarkashi (overnight, acclimatise). Day 2 Uttarkashi→Gangotri darshan + Sayan Aarti (overnight). Day 3 dawn darshan→return. For Gaumukh: add 1 day (3N/4D). For Do Dham: 4N/5D with Yamunotri first.
How many days are enough for Gangotri?
Minimum 2 nights (3 days) from Haridwar for a proper experience — 1 night at Uttarkashi (acclimatise) + 1 night at Gangotri (attend Sayan Aarti + dawn darshan). One-day is too rushed. For Gaumukh: 3 nights. For Do Dham: 4 nights.
Can I do Gangotri and Yamunotri in 4 days?
Yes — 4N/5D: Haridwar → Barkot (night 1) → Yamunotri trek + Barkot (night 2) → Uttarkashi (night 3) → Gangotri aarti (night 4) → return Haridwar. Classic Uttarkashi district Do Dham — both sources in one 5-day journey.
