Overview

Badrinath (3,133 m) is one of the holiest Vishnu shrines in India and the most revered of the four Char Dham sites. Dedicated to Badri Vishal (Lord Vishnu seated in yogic meditation under the badri tree), the temple stands at the confluence of the Alaknanda river and the Saraswati stream in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Open from late April to mid-November, Badrinath receives 12–15 lakh pilgrims annually. Unlike Kedarnath, a paved motor road reaches Badrinath directly — making it accessible to all.

Planning

Badrinath vs Kedarnath — key differences:
Badrinath (Vishnu) and Kedarnath (Shiva) are the two most important Char Dham shrines. Badrinath is significantly more accessible — the motor road goes all the way to the temple, making it suitable for elderly pilgrims, families with young children and anyone who cannot trek. The temple complex at Badrinath is larger and more elaborate, with the Tapt Kund hot spring right next to the temple steps. The altitude (3,133 m vs 3,583 m for Kedarnath) means altitude sickness risk is lower, though still present. The season is also longer — Badrinath opens and closes roughly 2–3 weeks after Kedarnath opens and closes.

Key things to do at Badrinath:

  • Badrinath temple darshan: Main event. Morning darshan 6:00 AM–1:00 PM, afternoon 3:30–9:00 PM. Arrive at 5:30 AM for pre-opening queue — the 6:00 AM opening is the least crowded. Or attend the Mahabhishek Puja (4:30 AM, pre-booked).
  • Tapt Kund: Sacred hot spring (45°C) directly below the temple steps. Pilgrims traditionally bathe here before darshan. Open 5:00 AM–9:00 PM. Free. See Tapt Kund guide.
  • Mana Village: 3 km from Badrinath — last Indian village before the Tibet border. Saraswati river spring, Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa, Bhim Pul. Half-day visit. See Mana Village guide.
  • Brahma Kapal: Sacred flat rock on the Alaknanda riverbank, 1 km from the temple. The only place in Hinduism where pind daan (last rites) for ancestors is offered directly to Lord Vishnu. See Brahma Kapal guide.
  • Valley of Flowers National Park: 17 km from Badrinath (via Govindghat). UNESCO World Heritage Site. 87 km² of alpine flowers in bloom July–August. Trek from Govindghat (16 km to Valley base). See nearby places guide.
  • Hemkund Sahib: 19 km trek from Govindghat (17 km before Badrinath). Sikh pilgrimage site at 4,329 m. One of the highest gurudwaras in the world. Combined with Badrinath in 2–3 day extensions.

Travel Tips

  • Registration is mandatory: Register free at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in before travelling. Carry printed/offline slip + original photo ID. Verified at registration check posts on the Rishikesh–Badrinath road. See registration guide.
  • Joshimath is the best overnight base: Staying in Joshimath (1,890 m) rather than Badrinath (3,133 m) reduces altitude sickness risk significantly. The acclimatisation night at Joshimath is important, especially if arriving from the plains. See hotels guide.
  • Best time: September–October: Clear mountain views, dry roads, moderate temperatures, lighter crowds and lower prices. May is exciting (opening week, fresh snow) but very crowded. See best time guide.
  • Dress code: Modest clothing (covered shoulders and legs). Remove footwear before the temple. The temple is Vaishnavite — non-Hindus are allowed but must maintain temple decorum. No photography inside the inner sanctum.
  • ATMs in Joshimath: Carry sufficient cash — while Joshimath has ATMs, connectivity can be unreliable. Badrinath town has limited ATM access. Withdraw cash in Joshimath or Chamoli.
Accommodation
  • Joshimath (recommended base): 15–20 hotels ranging from ₹600–₹8,000/night. Good facilities, ATMs, restaurants. 50 km (1.5 hrs) from Badrinath. See full hotels guide.
  • Badrinath town: Limited accommodation — GMVN Tourist Rest House (₹1,000–₹2,500), private guesthouses (₹800–₹3,000), dharamshalas (free–₹300). Book GMVN at gmvnl.in.
  • Govindghat (17 km before Badrinath): Base for Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib treks. Budget guesthouses ₹500–₹1,200.
