Badrinath Sightseeing 2026

Places to Visit near Badrinath

Complete guide to places near Badrinath 2026 — from the sacred Tapt Kund steps below the temple to the Valley of Flowers UNESCO site, Hemkund Sahib and the Satopanth glacier lake.

Overview

The Badrinath valley offers an extraordinary range of experiences within a small radius — from ancient pilgrimage sites a 5-minute walk from the temple to high-altitude glacial lakes reachable by a full-day trek. Even without adding a Valley of Flowers or Hemkund Sahib extension, a single day at Badrinath covers 4–5 major sites.

Planning

Mana Village (3 km, 3,219 m) — India's last village:
Mana is the most popular side-trip from Badrinath — a small village of 100–150 families of the Bhotiya tribe, 3 km northeast of the temple on an unpaved road. Mana is the last inhabited village in India before the Mana Pass and the Tibet border. Key sites within the village: Saraswati River Source — the mythological Saraswati river (which disappears underground at Allahabad/Prayagraj) is said to originate here; a small stream emerges from a cave. Vyas Gufa — the cave where sage Veda Vyasa is said to have composed the Mahabharata and the Vedas. Ganesh Gufa — where Lord Ganesha transcribed the Mahabharata as dictated by Vyasa. Bhim Pul — a massive natural rock bridge across the Saraswati river, supposedly placed by Bhima (Pandava) to allow Draupadi to cross. 15–20 minute auto-rickshaw from Badrinath (₹150 one way). See full guide at Mana Village guide.

Valley of Flowers (17 km via Govindghat, 3,658 m) — UNESCO World Heritage:
Valley of Flowers National Park is one of the most famous Himalayan treks in India. The 87 km² valley at 3,658 m is carpeted in over 500 species of wildflowers at peak bloom in July–August — including Himalayan blue poppy (Meconopsis aculeata), cobra lily, brahma kamal, primula and orchids. Access: drive from Badrinath to Govindghat (17 km) → trek Govindghat to Ghangaria (14 km, 3,048 m, 5–6 hrs) → trek Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers (6 km, 3,658 m, 2–3 hrs). Entry fee: ₹200/day (Indian), ₹600/day (foreign). Stay at Ghangaria (GMVN or tents). Season strictly July–September. See full nearby places guide.

Satopanth Lake (27 km, 4,402 m) — glacial pilgrimage lake:
A triangular glacial lake at 4,402 m, 27 km from Badrinath via a rough trek (2 days). Sacred in Hinduism — Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are said to bathe here on Ekadashi. The trek passes through spectacular moraines and glacier views (Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Swargarohini peaks). Not a casual trek — requires fitness, proper gear and ideally a guide. Open June–October. Best attempted September when trails are dry and skies clear.

Travel Tips

  • Combine all Badrinath-area sites in 1 day (efficient plan): 6:00 AM: Tapt Kund bath → temple darshan (6:30–7:30 AM) → 8:00 AM: breakfast → Brahma Kapal (800 m walk, 30 min) → auto to Mana Village (₹150, 15 min) → Vyas Gufa + Ganesh Gufa + Bhim Pul (1.5 hrs) → lunch in Mana → return Badrinath 1:00 PM → afternoon rest → 3:30 PM: afternoon darshan → 4:00 PM walk to Swargarohini viewpoint (if time) → 8:30 PM: Sayan Aarti. A complete Badrinath day without needing to rush.
  • Valley of Flowers: go in July–August only: Outside July–August, Valley of Flowers is either not at peak bloom (June has some flowers, September has fewer) or closed (October). If your dates are May, September or October, do Satopanth Lake or Vasudhara Falls instead.
  • Hemkund Sahib — spiritual + scenic: The Sikh pilgrimage site at 4,329 m (19 km trek from Govindghat) combines spiritual significance with one of the highest gurudwaras in the world. Free langar (community kitchen) — thousands of pilgrims are fed daily at the gurudwara. Season June–mid-October. A challenging but deeply rewarding 2-day extension from Badrinath.
  • ITBP check post at Mana: Indian nationals pass freely. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for Mana and beyond — obtain in advance from Chamoli district magistrate or Joshimath SDM office.
Accommodation
  • Valley of Flowers base — Ghangaria: GMVN Ghangaria (₹1,200–₹2,000), Forest Department huts (₹600–₹1,000), private guesthouses (₹800–₹1,500). Ghangaria has a small kitchen and basic amenities. All accommodation fills fast on summer weekends — book GMVN at gmvnl.in in advance.
  • Hemkund Sahib — Ghangaria or Govindghat: Same base as Valley of Flowers. The gurudwara at Hemkund Sahib itself has a large langar hall where pilgrims can sleep free (basic, bring sleeping bag).
  • Satopanth trek — camping only: No permanent accommodation above Badrinath on the Satopanth route. Camping at established campsites (bring tent and gear or hire from Badrinath). See hotels guide for base accommodation in Badrinath/Joshimath.
