Planning
10-step Badrinath Yatra planning checklist:
- Check opening date: Monitor badrikedar.org for the 2026 opening date announcement (expected January/February 2026 at Vasant Panchami). Opening ~30 April 2026.
- Register: Register free at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in as soon as the portal opens. For May dates, registration slots fill within hours. Download/print your registration slip.
- Book Mahabhishek Puja (optional): The 4:30 AM inner sanctum puja can be booked at badrikedar.org (₹2,500–₹4,000). Book 30–60 days ahead for May. Essential if you want the most profound temple experience.
- Train/flight tickets: Book Delhi → Haridwar/Rishikesh train at irctc.co.in or Delhi → Dehradun flight. Overnight trains (Dehradun Express, Nanda Devi Express) are best. Book 45–60 days ahead for May.
- Joshimath hotel: Book 4–6 weeks ahead for May, 1–2 weeks for September–October. See hotels guide.
- Arrange mountain taxi: Pre-arrange shared or private taxi from Rishikesh/Haridwar to Joshimath (₹4,000–₹6,500 private, ₹500–₹800/seat shared). Your Joshimath hotel can arrange taxis on request.
- Pack correctly: See packing list below. Key items: warm jacket, walking shoes, cash (₹3,000–₹5,000 withdrawn at Joshimath), Aadhaar + registration slip, medicines.
- Acclimatise at Joshimath: Spend at least one night at Joshimath (1,890 m) before going to Badrinath (3,133 m). Do not go directly from the plains to Badrinath in one day — altitude sickness risk is significant.
- Badrinath day plan: Depart Joshimath by 5:00 AM → arrive Badrinath 6:30 AM → queue for first darshan → Tapt Kund → breakfast → Brahma Kapal → Mana Village (auto ₹150 each way) → afternoon darshan 3:30 PM → Sayan Aarti 8:30 PM (if staying overnight).
- Return journey: Give 1 buffer day in your schedule for road delays (monsoon) or unexpected closures. Do not book a return train/flight too tight.
Altitude and health at Badrinath:
Badrinath at 3,133 m is not as high as Kedarnath (3,583 m) but altitude sickness is still a real risk, especially for those flying in from sea-level cities. Symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue. Prevention: acclimatise 1 night at Joshimath; move slowly on arrival at Badrinath; avoid alcohol; stay hydrated (3–4 litres water/day at altitude); avoid strenuous activity first 3 hours. Treatment: rest + descend (to Joshimath) if symptoms worsen; Diamox (acetazolamide) can be taken prophylactically — consult your doctor before travel. The Tapt Kund hot spring at 45°C is actually beneficial for acclimatisation — the warmth relaxes the body and reduces headache. Take a brief dip (10–15 min) before temple darshan.
Travel Tips
- Temple etiquette: Remove footwear before the temple steps. No leather inside (belt, bag — leave in shoe rack). Dress modestly — full-length clothing. No photography in mandapam or garbhagriha. Do not touch the idol or priest's ritual items without invitation. Maintain silence in inner sanctum. Offer donations at designated boxes — not directly to priests.
- Tapt Kund timing: The hot spring (45°C) opens at 5:00 AM — arrive early for a quiet, contemplative bath before the darshan crowd. After 9:00 AM in peak season, Tapt Kund can be crowded. September–October mornings: often just 3–5 people at 6:00 AM — extraordinary peace.
- Mobile connectivity: Jio and BSNL have reasonable 4G in Joshimath. Between Joshimath and Badrinath, connectivity is intermittent. At Badrinath town, BSNL has basic connectivity. Download offline maps, offline Wikipedia article on Badrinath and your hotel's phone number before leaving Joshimath.
- Non-veg strictly prohibited: Badrinath is a pure vegetarian zone — no non-veg food is served or allowed anywhere in Badrinath town. Do not carry packed non-veg food. This extends to onion and garlic in some strict interpretations — temple prasad is always sattvic (no onion/garlic). Joshimath does have non-veg restaurants for those who need meat.
