Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
- Book rafting and bungee in advance: These two activities are the hardest to arrange on arrival in peak season. Book rafting the evening before (walk to Shivpuri); book bungee at Jumpin Heights website 1–2 weeks ahead for weekends.
- Evening is sacred time: Build every evening's itinerary around the 5:30–7 PM slot — the Ganga Aarti is the anchor experience of Rishikesh and is best attended multiple times across your stay. Each evening's aarti has a slightly different character.
- Mornings for yoga and sunrise: The 5:30–8 AM window is Rishikesh at its most magical — mist on the Ganga, ashram bells, pilgrims at the ghats. Any morning of your stay that you spend at the ghats at dawn is rewarding.
FAQs
- What is the ideal number of days in Rishikesh?
- Two nights (a weekend) covers the core Rishikesh experience: rafting, Ganga Aarti, Laxman Jhula and the Beatles Ashram. Three nights adds Neelkanth or Kunjapuri and a second rafting or yoga day. Five nights to one week is appropriate for a yoga retreat or yoga teacher training programme. Ten days to four weeks for a serious 200-hour yoga teacher training course. Most Indian visitors do 2 nights; most international yoga travellers do 5–14 days.
- Should I go to Haridwar from Rishikesh?
- Yes — Haridwar's Har Ki Pauri Ganga Aarti (24 km from Rishikesh, 45 min) is a completely different scale and atmosphere from Rishikesh's Parmarth Niketan Aarti. Haridwar's aarti is larger, more chaotic and more intense; Rishikesh's is more intimate and ritualistic. Both are worth experiencing on consecutive evenings if time allows. A half-day Haridwar trip from Rishikesh is easy to slot into a 3+ day itinerary.
