Hour-by-Hour Weekend Plan

Rishikesh 2-Day Itinerary

The perfect Rishikesh 2-day itinerary covers everything essential — rafting, Ganga Aarti, Laxman Jhula, the Beatles Ashram and a morning yoga class — without rushing. Here is the hour-by-hour plan.

Rishikesh 2-Day Itinerary: Hour-by-Hour

Day 1: Arrival, Laxman Jhula & Ganga Aarti

Morning arrival (10–11 AM assumed):
Check in to your hotel/guesthouse near Laxman Jhula. Freshen up. The Laxman Jhula area has the best concentration of cafes, guesthouses and easy walking access to attractions.

11:00 AM — Laxman Jhula orientation walk:
Walk across the Laxman Jhula suspension bridge (free; views up and down the Ganga from the bridge are stunning). Explore the east bank market — rudraksha sellers, yoga clothing shops, small temples and cafes. Climb 2–3 floors of the Tera Manzil (13-storey Trayambakeshwar) temple for views. 45 minutes.

12:30 PM — Lunch at Laxman Jhula:
Little Buddha Cafe (rooftop Ganga views, smoothies, international food), Oasis Cafe (Israeli-influenced, organic) or Chotiwala (traditional thali, very local). Budget: ₹150–₃₅₀/person.

2:00 PM — Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia):
2 km walk from Laxman Jhula (or 5-min auto ₹50). Entry ₹150 Indians / ₹600 foreigners. Spend 60–90 minutes exploring the 84 abandoned meditation dome huts and the colourful Beatles murals covering every surface. The forest setting within Rajaji National Park adds to the atmosphere.

4:00 PM — Ram Jhula and Swarg Ashram walk:
Take a 5-min auto (₹50) from the Beatles Ashram area to Ram Jhula. Walk across Ram Jhula bridge. Explore the Swarg Ashram lanes on the east bank — free-walking, no vehicles, sadhus and small shrines. Walk south along the east bank to the Geeta Bhavan murals (scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana painted along the walls). 45 min.

5:30 PM — Parmarth Niketan Ganga Aarti:
Arrive at Parmarth Niketan on the east bank (Ram Jhula end) by 5:30 PM. The evening Ganga Aarti begins at approximately 6 PM (sunset-timed). Fifty+ priests in saffron robes perform the ceremony on the Ganga bank — flaming lamps, conch shells, sacred chants, and hundreds of earthen diyas floated on the river. Arrive early for a front-row position. Duration: 45–60 minutes. Entry: free.

7:00 PM — Dinner:
Return to Laxman Jhula. Dinner at the German Bakehouse (baked goods, hummus, Israeli), Little Buddha or the 60s Cafe (music, eclectic menu). Budget: ₹200–₄₀₀/person.

8:30 PM — Evening Laxman Jhula:
The bridge is atmospheric at night — lit from below, with the Ganga audible in the dark below. Walk across once more or sit at a riverside cafe. End Day 1.

Day 2: Rafting, Yoga & Departure

6:00 AM — Optional: Triveni Ghat sunrise:
A 15-min auto ride to Triveni Ghat (Muni Ki Reti area). Sunrise on the Ganga — pilgrims bathing in the golden light, incense and bells from nearby temples. Return by 7:30 AM.

7:30 AM — Breakfast:
At your guesthouse or a Laxman Jhula cafe. Fuel up — rafting starts soon.

8:30 AM — Depart for Shivpuri:
Shared auto to Shivpuri (16 km, 20 min, ₹50–₈₀). If you booked rafting the previous evening, go directly to your operator. If not, walk the strip of operators at Shivpuri and compare: ₹600–₉₀₀ per person for the 16-km Shivpuri–Rishikesh run.

9:00 AM – 12:30 PM — Shivpuri to Rishikesh rafting:
16 km of Grade II–III rapids: Three Blind Mice, Roller Coaster, Golf Course. A 2.5–3 hour run finishing at Rishikesh Beach. Lunch break included at the riverside beach (usually 20–30 min mid-run).

1:00 PM — Lunch at Laxman Jhula:
Post-rafting appetite — hearty thali or a cafe meal.

2:30 PM — Yoga class:
Walk-in yoga session at Parmarth Niketan or a Tapovan studio. 60–90 minutes. Hatha or Ashtanga recommended for active travellers post-rafting. Cost: ₹200–₅₀₀.

4:30 PM — Laxman Jhula market shopping:
Rudraksha beads (₹50–₅₀₀+), mala prayer beads, yoga clothing, Tibetan singing bowls (₹500–₂,₀₀₀), Ayurvedic products, incense. Negotiate 30–40% off the first asking price.

6:00 PM — Final chai at a Ganga-view cafe:
End your Rishikesh visit with a chai and a final look at the Ganga at dusk.

Evening / night — Depart Rishikesh.

Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
  • Key Day 2 prep (do on Day 1 evening): Book rafting operator at Shivpuri in person OR call a trusted operator and confirm your slot. This saves up to 1 hour of morning uncertainty.
  • Packing for Day 2: On rafting morning, leave valuables at the hotel. Take: a change of clothes and towel (you will get wet), water bottle, small amount of cash (₹100–₂₀₀ for snacks/auto), sunscreen. Your phone goes in the operator's waterproof bag.
  • Skip the Triveni Ghat sunrise if tired: The 6 AM Triveni Ghat visit is excellent but optional — the Day 1 Parmarth Niketan Ganga Aarti is the essential experience; the sunrise is a bonus for those who can wake early.
FAQs
Is 2 days enough to see Rishikesh?
Two days covers the core Rishikesh experience: Laxman Jhula, Ganga Aarti, Beatles Ashram, Shivpuri rafting and a yoga class. Nothing essential is missed. What a 3rd day adds: Neelkanth Mahadev temple (32 km, 1 day), Kunjapuri sunrise (25 km, early morning) or a second rafting run on the longer Marine Drive stretch. If your primary goals are rafting + Ganga Aarti + the Beatles Ashram, 2 days is genuinely sufficient. See 3-day itinerary for the extended version.
Where should I stay for a 2-day Rishikesh trip?
Stay near Laxman Jhula for the most convenient 2-day trip — 5-minute walk to the bridge, cafes, autos to Shivpuri, and the Beatles Ashram (2 km). Budget guesthouses in the Laxman Jhula area: ₹400–₈₀₀/night for a double room. Mid-range options with Ganga views: ₹1,500–₂,₅₀₀/night. See Rishikesh hotels guide.
