Rishikesh 3-Day Itinerary: Hour-by-Hour
Day 1: Arrival, Exploration & Ganga Aarti
Morning–Afternoon (Arrival): Check into your hotel/guesthouse near Laxman Jhula. Freshen up and have a late lunch at the hotel or a Laxman Jhula cafe. (If arriving from Delhi, you've driven 5–6 hours — take 30 minutes to rest.)
3:00 PM — Laxman Jhula orientation: Walk across the 450m suspension bridge. Take in the views up and down the Ganga from the bridge — the forested hills on both banks, the aquamarine water, the temples on the east bank skyline. Climb 2–3 floors of the 13-storey Trayambakeshwar temple (Tera Manzil) for panoramic views. 45 minutes.
4:00 PM — Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia): 2 km walk or 5-min auto (₹50) from Laxman Jhula. Entry: ₹150 Indians / ₹600 foreigners. 60–90 minutes exploring the 84 dome meditation huts, the Beatles murals covering every surface, and the forested ashram grounds. Open until 5 PM — time the visit to finish by 4:50 PM.
5:00 PM — Auto to Parmarth Niketan: 10-min auto from the Beatles Ashram to Parmarth Niketan on the east bank of Ram Jhula (₹60). Arrive by 5:30 PM at the latest.
5:30 PM — Parmarth Niketan Ganga Aarti: Find a good position in the crowd — the aarti starts at approximately 6 PM (sunset-timed). Fifty saffron-robed priests perform the ceremony: fire, conch, bells, Sanskrit chants, diyas floated on the Ganga. Duration: 45–60 minutes. Entry free. One of the most atmospheric evening events in India.
7:00 PM — Swarg Ashram evening walk: After the aarti, walk the lantern-lit lanes of Swarg Ashram on the east bank — evening devotional music from ashrams, chai at a riverside stall, the scent of incense. 30 minutes.
7:30 PM — Dinner at Laxman Jhula: Cross back to the west bank. Dinner at Little Buddha (rooftop views, eclectic menu), the German Bakehouse (baked goods, healthy food) or 60s Cafe (music, vibrant atmosphere).
Before sleeping (important): Walk to Shivpuri rafting camp (auto, 16 km, ₹60 shared) OR call an operator to book Day 2 rafting. Do this tonight — weekend Shivpuri slots sell out.
Day 2: Shivpuri Rafting & Yoga
6:00 AM — Optional: Triveni Ghat sunrise: Auto to Triveni Ghat (15 min, ₹80). Watch the sunrise on the Ganga — pilgrims bathing, the pink light on the river, temple bells. Return by 7:30 AM.
7:30 AM — Breakfast: At your guesthouse or a Laxman Jhula cafe. Eat well — rafting is 3 hours of physical activity.
8:30 AM — Depart for Shivpuri: Shared auto from Laxman Jhula to Shivpuri launch point (16 km, 20 min, ₹60–₈₀). Go to your pre-booked operator. Deposit phone in waterproof bag.
9:00 AM – 12:30 PM — Shivpuri to Rishikesh rafting: 16 km of Grade II–III Ganga rapids including Three Blind Mice, Roller Coaster, and Golf Course rapids. 2.5–3 hours on the river, finishing at Rishikesh Beach. Mid-run beach lunch break (15–20 min). An adrenaline-filled morning.
1:00 PM — Lunch: Post-rafting lunch at Laxman Jhula. Appetite will be strong.
2:30 PM — Walk-in yoga session: Parmarth Niketan runs afternoon yoga sessions. Alternatively, one of the Tapovan studios. 60–90 minute Hatha or Ashtanga class (₹200–₄₀₀). The contrast of the physical rafting morning followed by the meditative yoga afternoon is a quintessential Rishikesh experience.
4:30 PM — Ram Jhula and Sivananda Ashram: Walk to Ram Jhula (15 min) and cross to the west bank — the Sivananda Ashram (est. 1936, Divine Life Society) is here. Walk through its gardens and the small museum dedicated to Swami Sivananda.
6:00 PM — Triveni Ghat evening aarti: The Triveni Ghat in Muni Ki Reti also holds an evening aarti (smaller and more intimate than Parmarth Niketan). Auto to Triveni Ghat (₹60). A different, quieter Ganga Aarti experience.
7:30 PM — Shopping at Laxman Jhula market: Rudraksha, singing bowls, yoga clothing, incense, Ayurvedic products. Negotiate 30–40% off opening prices. End evening at a riverside cafe.
Day 3: Kunjapuri Sunrise & Neelkanth Temple
4:30 AM — Depart for Kunjapuri: This is an early morning but the most spectacular view near Rishikesh. Book a cab/auto the evening before (₹500–₆₀₀ return). Kunjapuri Devi temple is 25 km from Rishikesh, 1,676m altitude. 40–45 min drive in the dark on a winding mountain road.
5:30 AM — Kunjapuri sunrise: The 100-step climb to the temple and the view from the top: a 270-degree panorama of the Garhwal Himalaya — Chaukhamba, Kedarnath Peak, Bandarpunch and the white ranges. The Ganga valley visible below, the sun rising over the mountains. Duration: 45–60 minutes. Entry: free. The most rewarding experience in the Rishikesh day-trip circuit.
7:00 AM — Return to Rishikesh. Breakfast.
10:00 AM — Depart for Neelkanth Mahadev temple (32 km): Hire the same cab or a new one (₹600–₉₀₀ return). The road from Rishikesh to Neelkanth passes through Rajaji National Park's dense sal forest — windows down, watch for birds and the occasional deer or elephant. The 32-km journey takes 1 hour on the narrow winding forest road.
11:00 AM – 12:30 PM — Neelkanth Mahadev: One of the most important Shiva temples in Uttarakhand. Situated at 1,330m in the forest. The story: Neelkanth is where Shiva drank the poison Halahala that emerged from the cosmic ocean churning, turning his throat blue (Neelkanth = blue throat). The temple is atmospheric and the forest setting is beautiful. Entry: free. Queue time: 20–45 min on weekdays, 1–2 hrs on weekends.
1:00 PM — Return to Rishikesh. Final lunch.
2:30 PM — Last Laxman Jhula walk, chai, final Ganga view.
3:30 PM — Depart Rishikesh.

Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
- Key pre-trip bookings: (1) Hotel near Laxman Jhula. (2) Shivpuri rafting on Day 1 evening. (3) Kunjapuri cab on Day 2 evening (ask your hotel for a driver, or book directly with the Shivpuri auto driver). These three are the only advance bookings needed.
- Day 3 Kunjapuri-Neelkanth order: This order (Kunjapuri sunrise first, Neelkanth second) is optimal — Kunjapuri's views are at their best at dawn and the temple queue is shortest mid-morning. If you arrive at Neelkanth between 10–11 AM on a weekday, queue is short; weekends add 1 hour.
- Rest enough: Day 1 is light (evening only). Day 2 is the physical peak (rafting + yoga). Day 3 is early (4:30 AM wake) but short on activity after midday, which allows a comfortable afternoon departure. This pace is comfortable for most people.
FAQs
- What is the best 3-day itinerary for Rishikesh?
- The itinerary above (Day 1: arrival + Beatles Ashram + Ganga Aarti; Day 2: Shivpuri rafting + yoga + Triveni Ghat aarti; Day 3: Kunjapuri sunrise + Neelkanth temple) covers the best of Rishikesh's adventure, spiritual and natural dimensions. The only thing it doesn't include is the longer rafting runs (Marine Drive 26 km or Kaudiyala 36 km) — if you prioritise a longer rafting adventure over Neelkanth, substitute Day 3's morning with the Marine Drive run and visit Neelkanth on Day 2 afternoon instead.
- Can I see both Kunjapuri and Neelkanth in one day?
- Yes, comfortably — the route above does both in one day. Kunjapuri (5:30 AM sunrise) and Neelkanth (10 AM–12:30 PM) are in different directions from Rishikesh but both manageable by cab in a single morning–afternoon. The total cab hire for both (Rishikesh–Kunjapuri–Rishikesh then Rishikesh–Neelkanth–Rishikesh) is approximately ₹1,200–₁,₅₀₀ round trip total. Alternatively, negotiate a single cab for the whole Day 3 loop (₹1,500–₂,₀₀₀ all-inclusive).
