Kedarnath Aarti

Complete guide to all five daily Kedarnath aarti timings — Pratah Aarti at 4 AM, Dwarpuja, Bhog Aarti, Sandhya Aarti and Shayan Aarti. Which to attend, how to book inner-sanctum access and what each ritual means.

Overview

The Kedarnath aarti is the daily worship ritual at the Kedarnath Jyotirlinga — performed five times a day by the Rawal (chief priest) and temple pandits. Each aarti has its own ritual significance, its own atmosphere and its own quality of access for pilgrims. For many devotees, attending the Pratah Aarti (4 AM Maha Abhishek) or the Sandhya Aarti (sunset) is the central experience of the entire Kedarnath Yatra.

Planning

Each Kedarnath aarti in detail:

1. Pratah Aarti / Maha Abhishek (4:00 AM):
The most sacred ritual of the Kedarnath day. The temple opens in pre-dawn darkness. The Shivalinga is bathed with panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar) and then Gangajal. Bilva leaves and bhasm (sacred ash) are applied. The Rawal chants the Rudrashtadhyayi and Mahimna Stotra in the stone sanctum. Ghee lamps are waved (the aarti itself). The ritual inside the garbha griha is for booked Abhishek pilgrims only (₹3,500–₹5,000, booked at badrikedar.org). However, the outer courtyard is open to all from 4 AM — you can hear the mantra chanting and see the lamp flames through the inner sanctum door. To attend this aarti you must be staying overnight at Kedarnath.

2. Dwarpuja / Opening Aarti (7:00 AM):
The formal opening of the temple for general public darshan. A brief puja is performed before the inner sanctum doors are opened wide. From 7:00 AM, general pilgrims begin filing in for darshan. Morning light enters the temple from the east-facing entrance. A relatively calm, peaceful time for darshan before the mid-morning crowd builds.

3. Bhog Aarti / Noon (12:00 PM):
The temple closes at 12:00 PM for the Bhog Aarti — the ritual midday meal offered to the deity. The inner sanctum door is shut and the offering (bhog) of fruits, sweets and cooked food is made by the priests. Temple reopens at 3:00 PM. Use this break to visit Shankaracharya Samadhi, Gandhi Sarovar or Bhairavnath temple.

4. Sandhya Aarti (5:00 PM) — the one not to miss:
The Kedarnath sunset aarti is considered one of the most powerful religious experiences in India. As the sun drops behind the Kedarnath range (around 4:30–5:00 PM), the temperature drops sharply and the priests begin the evening ritual. Large brass aarti lamps are lit and waved before the Shivalinga. Conch shells are blown. Temple bells ring. Hundreds of pilgrims in the courtyard sing bhajans (devotional songs). The Kedarnath peak behind the temple glows orange in the last light. The entire sequence — altitude, cold air, ancient stone, firelight, music and the Himalayan sunset — creates a profoundly moving experience.

5. Shayan Aarti (8:30 PM):
The final aarti of the day — the "bedtime" ritual when the deity is ceremonially put to rest. The inner sanctum is prepared for night: the Shivalinga is wrapped in a special cloth (the deity's bedding), the lamps are extinguished one by one, and the final mantras are chanted. After the Shayan Aarti, the temple closes for the night (approximately 9:00 PM). Only pilgrims staying overnight at Kedarnath can attend this intimate ceremony.

Travel Information

  • To attend Pratah and Shayan Aarti: You must stay overnight at Kedarnath (GMVN tents ₹1,200–₹2,500 or private guesthouse ₹800–₹2,000). Day-trippers — whether by helicopter or trek — cannot attend 4 AM or 8:30 PM aartis. Overnight stay at Kedarnath is strongly recommended to experience both.
  • Maha Abhishek booking: Book at badrikedar.org → Online Puja → Kedarnath → Maha Abhishek → select date → pay → download receipt. Limited to 10–15 pilgrims per day. May opening weeks sell out fast — book 2–3 months ahead for May visits.
  • Getting to the temple for 4 AM Pratah Aarti: Kedarnath temple is 0.5 km from the GMVN tent camp and about 1 km from the main guesthouse area. Wake at 3:30 AM and walk to the temple in the dark (carry a torch/headlamp). The path is clear but uneven — go slowly. The cold at 4 AM in October can be −5°C to −8°C.
Tips
  • Attend the Sandhya Aarti even if you don't stay overnight: If you trek up on day 2 of your Kedarnath visit, you have time for the full morning darshan, the Sandhya Aarti at sunset and then the descent can begin the following morning. Don't rush back to Gaurikund on the same evening you arrive — the Sandhya Aarti is worth one night at Kedarnath.
  • Dress warmly for aarti: Evenings (Sandhya Aarti) and pre-dawn (Pratah Aarti) at 3,583 m are cold in all months — even June can be 2°C at 4 AM. Wear thermal base + fleece + wind jacket. Cold prevents concentration during prayer — dress well so you can be present fully.
  • Photography at aarti: Photography is permitted in the temple courtyard during all aartis. Inside the inner sanctum and of the Shivalinga directly, photography is not allowed. Respectful photography of the aarti lamps, conch-blowing priests and Himalayan backdrop is wonderful — keep your flash off and hold your phone discreetly.
  • Arrive 30 minutes before aarti time: Good positions in the courtyard for Sandhya Aarti fill up 30–45 minutes before. Arriving at 4:30 PM for the 5:00 PM Sandhya Aarti gives you a clear front-row view of the ceremony.
