Best Time to Visit Kedarnath

Month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Kedarnath — weather, crowds, costs, trek conditions and the honest answer to May vs September for the Kedarnath Yatra 2026.

Overview

The Kedarnath yatra season runs late April to late October — approximately 6 months. Within this window, conditions vary dramatically by month. September is consistently the best overall month; opening week in May is the most spiritually charged. July–August monsoon is the most challenging. The right month depends on your priorities: weather clarity, crowds, cost, spiritual atmosphere, or photography.

Planning

September — the single best month for Kedarnath:
September at Kedarnath (3,583 m) is the clearest, most beautiful period of the entire season. The monsoon retreats by early September, leaving the trail dry, the skies blue and the Kedarnath peak and surrounding glaciers gleaming white against clear blue skies. Temperatures: 5–15°C day, −2 to 2°C night (manageable with good gear). Crowds: significantly lighter than May–June — temple queues are 15–30 min instead of 2–4 hours. Helicopter: much easier to book (same-day slots often available). Cost: hotels and packages 20–30% cheaper. Photography: September is the single best month for Kedarnath peak photography. The golden-hour light in September morning and evening is exceptional.

May opening weeks — the most spiritually charged time:
The Kedarnath temple opening day (~29 April 2026, Akshaya Tritiya) is deeply spiritually significant — thousands of pilgrims converge for the opening ceremony when the temple doors open after 6 months of winter. The trail still has residual snow above 3,000 m, giving the landscape a dramatic wintry feel. The procession of Kedarnath's utsav murti back from Ukhimath is an unforgettable ceremonial experience. Downside: extreme crowds, hour-long queues, premium prices, and the trail is at its most challenging (ice/snow patches). Recommended for: those who specifically want the opening ceremony or the spiritual significance of the first darshan of the season.

Monsoon (July–August) — visit with caution:
The Kedarnath trail is open during July–August (the temple never closes for monsoon). But conditions are genuinely challenging: heavy rain (200–400 mm/month), muddy trail, leeches on the lower trail sections, cloudy skies (no mountain views), and helicopter services frequently cancelled due to poor visibility. The 2013 Kedarnath floods (June 2013) were a monsoon event — while major flood risk has been reduced by NDRF infrastructure, trail closures due to landslide or flash flood remain a risk in July–August. Visit only if your dates are fixed and you're prepared for challenging conditions.

Travel Information

  • Temperature at Kedarnath by month: Late April (−5 to 5°C day, −12 to −8°C night with wind chill) · May (5–12°C day, −3 to 2°C night) · June (8–14°C day, 0–5°C night) · July–August (10–15°C day, 3–8°C night, rain) · September (8–15°C day, −2 to 2°C night) · October early (3–10°C day, −5 to −2°C night) · October late (−2 to 5°C day, −12 to −8°C night).
  • Snowfall on the trek: Snow on the Gaurikund–Kedarnath trail: late April (trail above 3,000 m still snow-covered, cleared by NDRF/volunteers) · early May (snow patches above 3,200 m) · late May to September (snow-free trail) · October late (first fresh snowfall possible above 3,200 m). See our detailed snowfall guide.
  • Helicopter availability by month: May–June: high demand, book 30–60 days ahead. July–August: slots available but frequently cancelled (weather). September: good availability, 1–2 weeks ahead sufficient. October: very easy booking, slots often same-week.
Tips
  • If you can only go once — choose September: Clear skies, manageable temperatures, lower crowds, better helicopter availability, lower cost and the best photography conditions. September wins on every dimension except spiritual opening-ceremony atmosphere.
  • If you're going for the first time in May — go late May, not opening week: The first 2 weeks of May (opening to ~15 May) are the most crowded — extreme queues, overloaded helicopter slots, packed accommodation. Late May (15–31 May) still has excellent weather, the snow has cleared from the trail, but crowds are 30–40% lighter than opening week.
  • October closing is a hidden gem: The Kedarnath closing day (typically Bhai Dooj, ~20–23 October 2026) mirrors the opening ceremony — the sacred procession of the utsav murti down to Ukhimath is deeply moving and very lightly attended compared to opening day. If the opening ceremony is over-subscribed in 2026, the closing ceremony is an equally powerful alternative with far fewer crowds.
FAQs
What is the best time to visit Kedarnath?
September is the best overall month — clear views, dry trail, moderate temperature, light crowds, lower cost and easy helicopter booking. Early May (opening ceremony) is best for spiritual significance but very crowded. Early October is also excellent and very quiet. Avoid July–August (heavy monsoon rain, slippery trail, helicopter cancellations).
Is May or September better for Kedarnath?
September is better for most pilgrims: clearer weather, lighter crowds, 20–30% lower cost, easier helicopter booking and the best mountain views. May is better for the opening ceremony experience, seeing the snow-covered landscape and the high-energy pilgrimage atmosphere. For a first visit without date constraints: choose September.
When is Kedarnath closed?
Kedarnath closes in late October (around Bhai Dooj, ~20–23 October 2026). Temple is sealed for winter; deity moves to Ukhimath village. Re-opens late April 2027 (Akshaya Tritiya). Closed for approximately 6 months every year. Check exact 2026 closing date at badrikedar.org in October.
