Overview
Reaching Kedarnath requires a two-stage journey: (1) reaching Sonprayag/Gaurikund by road, and (2) reaching the temple from Gaurikund by 16 km trek or by helicopter from nearby helipads. No road, railway or direct flight reaches Kedarnath itself — the last 16 km are permanently motor-free by government regulation and geographical reality.

Planning
Route 1 — By Train (most popular):
Delhi → Haridwar by train → Guptkashi by road → Sonprayag → Gaurikund → Trek/Helicopter to Kedarnath
Train from Delhi (New Delhi / Hazrat Nizamuddin) to Haridwar: 5–6 hrs. Key trains: Dehradun Express (12017, departs 7:10 PM, arrives 12:10 AM), Mussoorie Express (14041, departs 10:00 PM, arrives 4:55 AM), Shatabdi Express (12017) for morning departure. From Haridwar: shared bus/Uttarakhand Roadways to Guptkashi (175 km, 6–7 hrs, ₹250–₹350) or private taxi (₹2,500–₹4,000). From Guptkashi: shared jeep to Sonprayag → Gaurikund.
Route 2 — By Flight (fastest to base):
Delhi → Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun (1 hr) → Guptkashi by taxi → Gaurikund → Trek/Helicopter
IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet operate Delhi–Dehradun flights (40–50 min flight, ₹2,500–₹6,000). From Jolly Grant Airport, pre-book a taxi to Guptkashi (210 km, 7–8 hrs, ₹4,500–₹7,000). Fastest Delhi–Gaurikund combination: 9–10 hrs total. Best for: time-constrained travellers, elderly pilgrims, those with connecting flights.
Route 3 — By Road (most budget-friendly):
Delhi → Haridwar by bus (ISBT Kashmiri Gate): UPSRTC Volvo buses depart every 30 min from 5:00 AM to 11:30 PM (5–6 hrs, ₹400–₹700). From Haridwar: Uttarakhand Roadways bus to Guptkashi (₹250–₹300, shared, 6–7 hrs) or GMVN bus during yatra season (₹300–₹400 direct to Sonprayag). Full road trip Delhi → Gaurikund: 14–16 hrs door-to-door, possible in one stretch with an overnight bus and connecting transport.
Final 16 km — Trek or Helicopter from Gaurikund:
All routes converge at Gaurikund. From Gaurikund: 16 km trek (6–8 hrs ascent) or shared jeep to Phata helipad (30 min) for helicopter to Kedarnath (10 min, ₹3,500–₹4,500 one way). See our trek distance guide and helicopter booking guide for the final leg details.
Travel Information
- Sonprayag registration check post: All pilgrims must stop at the Sonprayag check post for registration slip verification before the shared jeep to Gaurikund. Carry your printed/offline registration slip and original photo ID. The check post operates 24 hours during the yatra season.
- Shared jeep Sonprayag → Gaurikund: Government-operated shared jeeps run continuously from Sonprayag to Gaurikund (5 km, ₹50–₹80 per person). No private vehicles allowed on this stretch. Frequency: every 10–15 minutes. Takes 15–20 min. Drop-off at Gaurikund parking area (trek start).
- Road conditions: The Rishikesh–Guptkashi road (NH7) is mostly 2-lane mountain road. Travel time varies: 6–7 hrs in good conditions, 8–10 hrs after monsoon rain or landslide clearance. Check BRO road status at bro.gov.in or call the GHNL helpline before starting.
- Best transport for different travellers: Solo/budget: overnight train Delhi–Haridwar + shared bus to Guptkashi. Families/comfort: flight to Dehradun + private taxi to Guptkashi. Elderly/time-limited: flight + private taxi + helicopter all the way to Kedarnath.
Tips
- Book train tickets 60–90 days ahead: The Haridwar/Dehradun trains from Delhi fill up months in advance during May–June yatra season. Book on IRCTC the day booking opens (90 days before travel). Tatkal quota (booking 1 day ahead) is available but expensive and unreliable for this route.
- Haridwar is a better rail gateway than Rishikesh: Haridwar junction has many more train connections (express trains from Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi). Rishikesh station is a small terminus with limited trains. Take the train to Haridwar and a local bus/taxi to Rishikesh if needed — don't specifically target Rishikesh as a rail destination.
- The Guptkashi–Sonprayag stretch is the most congested: On peak season mornings (5:00–10:00 AM), the road from Guptkashi to Sonprayag can be severely congested with pilgrim traffic. Leave Guptkashi by 4:00 AM or after 10:00 AM to avoid peak congestion. Police regulate one-way traffic on this stretch during peak season.
