Planning

1. Gandhi Sarovar (Chorabari Lake) — 3 km from Kedarnath:
The most popular extension from Kedarnath itself. The glacial tarn at 3,900 m sits in a rock-walled cirque directly above the temple — the Kedarnath and Kedar Dome peaks reflect in its still water. Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed here in 1948, lending it the name Gandhi Sarovar. The trail from the temple is steep (300 m gain in 3 km). Visit in the morning before cloud builds (9:00–10:00 AM departure from temple). Guides recommended above 3,700 m — the trail becomes faint. Best: May–June and September–October.

2. Bhairavnath Temple — 500 m from Kedarnath:
The guardian deity of Kedarnath. This small but powerful temple sits on a raised natural platform 500 m northeast of the main temple. The walk takes 10 minutes. The view from the Bhairavnath platform encompasses the entire Kedarnath valley — the temple below, GMVN tent camp, the Mandakini headwaters and the mountain walls. Visiting Bhairavnath after the main darshan is considered spiritually complete — tradition holds that the Kedarnath Yatra is incomplete without Bhairavnath's blessings.

3. Shankaracharya Samadhi — directly behind the main temple:
The samadhi (final resting place) of Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century philosopher-saint who revived the Kedarnath Yatra after centuries of neglect. He attained mahasamadhi at Kedarnath at the age of 32. The samadhi is a quiet stone enclosure immediately behind the main temple — easily missed by rushing pilgrims. Sit here in silence for 15 minutes — the energy of the spot, ancient stone, thin mountain air and the sound of the Mandakini below is unlike anything else.

4. Vasuki Tal — 8 km trek from Kedarnath (4,135 m):
A high-altitude glacial lake at 4,135 m — one of the most spectacular treks in the Kedarnath Sanctuary. The trail goes northwest from Kedarnath through the Vasuki glacier moraine. At Vasuki Tal, the entire Chaukhamba massif (7,138 m) is reflected in the still water. Full day trek — start by 6:00 AM, carry packed lunch, return by 4:00 PM. Only for fit, acclimatised trekkers. Guide mandatory (the route is not marked beyond 3,800 m). Best: June and September.

5. Triyuginarayan — 22 km from Sonprayag:
A significant detour (half day from Guptkashi) to the Vishnu temple where Shiva and Parvati were married. The eternal flame in the temple courtyard has burned continuously since creation (per tradition). Peaceful, uncrowded, deeply atmospheric. Combine with your Kedarnath yatra by visiting on Day 1 (Guptkashi → Triyuginarayan → Sonprayag overnight) or Day 4 (return day, en route to Haridwar). Road is motorable to the temple.

6. Deoria Tal — 50 km from Guptkashi + 3 km trek:
A glacially fed lake at 2,438 m near Sari village, famous for the mirror-reflection of the Chaukhamba peaks (7,138 m) at dawn. The 3 km trek from Sari takes 1.5 hrs. Best visited at sunrise — either camp overnight at Deoria Tal or start very early from Guptkashi (3:00 AM drive). A perfect add-on to Day 1 of your Kedarnath itinerary (Guptkashi → Deoria Tal sunrise → Sari → continue to Sonprayag for the main yatra).

7. Tungnath and Chandrashila — 75 km from Guptkashi:
Tungnath (3,680 m) is the world's highest Shiva temple — older and higher than Kedarnath, with a dramatically different character (smaller, more intimate). Chandrashila peak (4,000 m) is a 1.5 km further climb from Tungnath — 360° panoramic view of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar range and Chaukhamba. Full day from Guptkashi or overnight at Chopta. The Tungnath–Chandrashila experience is often described as the highlight of any extended Kedarnath trip.

Travel Information

  • Kedarnath sanctuary permits: Gandhi Sarovar and Vasuki Tal are within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. No separate permit is required for these day treks as part of the Kedarnath Yatra. However, overnight camping within the sanctuary requires a forest department permit.
  • Combining nearby places with the main itinerary: Bhairavnath + Shankaracharya Samadhi: day of Kedarnath visit (1–2 hrs). Gandhi Sarovar: morning after Kedarnath overnight (4 hrs). Triyuginarayan: Day 1 or return day (half day). Deoria Tal: Day 1 morning (sunrise) before continuing to Kedarnath. Tungnath: dedicated day trip from Guptkashi on return leg.
Tips
  • Don't skip Bhairavnath: Many pilgrims rush from Kedarnath darshan directly to the descent trek. The 10-minute walk to Bhairavnath temple is one of the most rewarding detours — the view of the entire Kedarnath valley from the temple platform is extraordinary and the temple itself is deeply atmospheric.
  • Gandhi Sarovar requires a guide above 3,700 m: The trail is clear until 3,600 m but becomes rocky and unmarked above. Hire a local guide at the GMVN tent camp (₹300–₹500 for the half-day excursion). The lake can be dangerous in snowfall.
  • Deoria Tal sunrise is worth a 3 AM drive: The Chaukhamba reflection at Deoria Tal at 5:30 AM (sunrise) is one of the most photographed mountain scenes in India. If photography or natural beauty matters to you, the predawn drive from Guptkashi to Sari is absolutely worth it.
