Kedarnath Yatra 2026

Kedarnath Packing List

Complete Kedarnath packing list 2026 — essential documents, clothing layers, footwear, medicines, gadgets and what NOT to pack. Optimised for both the 16 km trek and helicopter visitors.

Overview

The Kedarnath packing list is driven by three realities: (1) altitude — 3,583 m means cold, thin air and UV exposure requiring specific gear; (2) weight — helicopter pilgrims are limited to 5 kg per person; trekkers should target 7–9 kg maximum to manage the 16 km haul; (3) sanctity — the temple zone has strict rules on plastic, leather and non-veg food that affect what you bring.

Planning

Complete Kedarnath packing checklist:

Documents (carry in waterproof ziplock):

  • Kedarnath Yatra registration slip (printed + saved offline on phone)
  • Original photo ID — Aadhaar Card / Passport / Voter ID (same as used for registration)
  • Helicopter e-ticket / hotel booking confirmation (if applicable)
  • Travel insurance card + emergency contact number written on paper
  • Medical fitness certificate (if age 60+, required for registration)
  • Sufficient cash (ATMs in Guptkashi — none at Kedarnath. Carry ₹3,000–₹5,000 cash minimum)

Clothing — layering system (the key to comfort at 3,583 m):

  • Base layer (moisture-wicking): Thermal top + thermal bottom — merino wool or synthetic, not cotton. Worn throughout the trek and at Kedarnath.
  • Mid-layer (insulation): Fleece jacket (100–200 weight) — worn over base when resting or at Kedarnath in the evening.
  • Outer layer (wind/waterproof): Windproof and waterproof jacket — essential in monsoon (Jun–Sep) and against cold wind at altitude. Down jacket additionally for October visits.
  • Trekking trousers: Quick-dry synthetic. NOT jeans (take too long to dry if wet, heavy when damp). One pair is sufficient for a 2-day trek.
  • Warm hat/beanie: Essential — heat loss at altitude is rapid. Compact, stuffs into pocket.
  • Gloves: Lightweight gloves for trek; thicker fleece/down gloves for October.
  • Wool/synthetic socks: 2–3 pairs. Merino wool socks are best for multi-day use and blister prevention.
  • Gaiters (optional): If visiting in May opening week (snow/ice on upper trail) or October (possible snowfall).
  • Puja clothes (separate): Dhoti (men) or saree/salwar with dupatta (women) for temple darshan. Lightweight — carry in a separate small bag.

Footwear:

  • Trekking shoes (mandatory for trekkers): Ankle support, waterproof or water-resistant, with grip sole (Vibram or equivalent). Must be broken in — not new. Trail runners are acceptable for May–September conditions.
  • Sandals/Chappals: Lightweight Crocs or sandals for Kedarnath camp/guesthouse area in the evenings (your feet need rest after the trek). Also: footwear is removed 100 m before the temple — easy-to-remove sandals make the final approach comfortable.
  • Microspike crampons (May opening week / Oct): Available for rent at Gaurikund (₹300–₹500/day). If snow is confirmed on upper trail, rent these — they prevent ice slips on the Linchauli–Kedarnath section.

Travel Information

Medicines and first aid:

  • Diamox (Acetazolamide 250 mg): Most effective prevention for altitude sickness. Dosage: 125–250 mg twice daily, starting 24 hours before ascent. Consult doctor before use. Side effects: tingling in fingers/toes (common, harmless), increased urination. NOT for sulpha allergy patients.
  • Paracetamol (500 mg): For altitude headache — the most common AMS symptom. 2 tablets per dose. Note: Paracetamol does NOT treat AMS — it only manages the headache while you descend or acclimatise.
  • ORS sachets: 5–10 sachets. Mix with water throughout the trek for electrolyte replacement.
  • Antacid (Pantoprazole/Omeprazole): Altitude reduces gastric motility — mild indigestion and nausea are common. One tablet in the morning with breakfast.
  • Anti-nausea (Avomine/Ondansetron): For vomiting caused by AMS or motion sickness in vehicles on the winding mountain roads.
  • Betadine solution + gauze + band-aids: For blisters, cuts, abrasions. Blisters from new or stiff shoes are the most common minor injury on the trek.
  • Personal prescription medicines: Carry double the quantity needed. Pack in original labelled bottles — medical staff at Kedarnath may need to identify medicines in an emergency.

Gadgets and accessories:

  • Headlamp + 2 sets spare batteries (essential for 4 AM Abhishek; also monsoon afternoons darken early)
  • Power bank (10,000–20,000 mAh) — no reliable electricity at Kedarnath for charging
  • UV sunglasses — UV index at 3,583 m is extreme (UV index 10–12 in May). Do not neglect these.
  • Sunscreen SPF50+ — face, neck, hands. Reapply every 2 hours on exposed skin.
  • Trekking poles — 1 pair for ascent, essential for descent. Rent at Gaurikund (₹100–₹200/day) or carry collapsible poles.
  • 2-litre water bottle (BPA-free, insulated preferred) — refill at checkpoint water points
  • Small day towel + biodegradable soap + wet wipes (toilet facilities at Kedarnath are basic)
Tips
  • Weigh your pack before leaving Guptkashi: Pack everything you think you need, then weigh it. Helicopter limit is 5 kg strictly enforced. Trek target is under 8 kg. Remove anything non-essential. Guptkashi hotels will store large bags safely for ₹50–₹100.
  • Plastic-free is mandatory: Plastic bags, plastic bottles and plastic packaging are banned in the Kedarnath sanctuary under a 2019 state government order. You will be fined at the Sonprayag checkpoint. Carry a reusable steel or BPA-free bottle; transfer snacks to cloth bags before entry.
  • Pack puja materials carefully: Bilva leaves (widely available at Gaurikund and Kedarnath stalls for ₹20–₹50/bunch), a small steel diya (oil lamp), agarbatti (incense) and a red cloth for wrapping your puja offerings can be purchased on arrival — you do not need to carry these from home.
  • Down jacket vs fleece — which to choose: For May visits: fleece + windproof jacket is usually sufficient. For October: add a packable down jacket (500g, fits in daypack). For overnight stays at Kedarnath in any month: down jacket is essential — nights are −2°C to −10°C depending on month.
