Overview
Sonprayag (1,829 m) is the last road point with private vehicle access on the Kedarnath yatra route. All pilgrims must stop here for registration verification before a government-operated shared jeep takes them the final 5 km to Gaurikund (1,934 m) — the trek start. Private cars, taxis and buses cannot proceed beyond Sonprayag. Sonprayag is also where the Kedarnath daily pilgrim cap is enforced — if your registration date is today, you will be allowed through; if not (wrong date or no registration), you will be turned back.

Planning
The Sonprayag registration process — step by step:
- Park at Sonprayag parking lot: Government parking area (₹100–₹200/day for cars). If you're in a shared taxi, the vehicle stops here and you disembark with your daypack. Large luggage can be stored at the parking area's basic cloak room or left in the taxi if returning the same day.
- Walk to the check post (100 m): The registration verification counter is a short walk from the parking area. Queue at the counter — in peak May season, queues can be 20–45 min long. Queue management is generally orderly with separate lines for trekkers and helicopter pilgrims.
- Show documents at counter: Present: (a) registration slip — printed paper or phone screen showing the QR code and registration ID. (b) Original photo ID matching the name on registration — Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID or Driving Licence. Staff scan the QR code and verify your registration date against the day's date.
- Board the shared jeep to Gaurikund: Once cleared, you are directed to the jeep bay. Government jeeps run continuously (every 10–15 min). Cost: ₹50–₹80 per person. Journey: 5 km, 15–20 min. The road beyond Sonprayag is narrow and in poor condition — jeeps navigate it carefully. Drop at Gaurikund parking area.
- Start the trek from Gaurikund: Trek registration at Gaurikund trek start (brief stop — wave your registration slip). Hire porter or horse if needed. Begin trek. Kedarnath: 16 km, 6–8 hrs.
For helicopter pilgrims at Sonprayag:
If you are taking the helicopter from Phata helipad (the largest and most popular helipad): Sonprayag → Phata helipad is 25–30 km by road (45–60 min by taxi/shared jeep, ₹200–₹400). You still pass through a registration check point near the helipad. Your registration slip is mandatory for helicopter boarding. Helicopter pilgrims do NOT need to go to Gaurikund — after the Sonprayag registration check, take the road towards Phata (not the jeep to Gaurikund).
Travel Information
- No private vehicle beyond Sonprayag: This is strictly enforced. Even if you have a private car all the way from Delhi, it cannot proceed past Sonprayag. The government operates the Sonprayag–Gaurikund route exclusively with shared jeeps for environmental and safety reasons. Park at Sonprayag, take the shared jeep, collect your car on return.
- Daily cap enforcement: Kedarnath has a daily pilgrim cap of ~12,000–15,000 per day (managed at Sonprayag + helicopter quota). This cap is enforced at Sonprayag. If the day's quota is reached, pilgrims without prior registration for that date are turned away. Pre-registration is not optional in peak season.
- No ATMs at Sonprayag: The last ATMs are in Guptkashi (35 km before Sonprayag). Carry sufficient cash before reaching Sonprayag. Shared jeep fare, porter hire, horse hire, food stalls at Gaurikund — all cash. Budget: ₹3,000–₹5,000/person cash for Gaurikund onwards.
- Sonprayag confluence: Sonprayag sits at the confluence of the Mandakini and Son Ganga rivers. The name means "Son's confluence" — Son Ganga is a small tributary. A short walk from the parking area offers a view of the confluence, considered a sacred bathing spot.
Tips
- Download your registration slip offline: Mobile signal at Sonprayag is weak (especially in the queue). Download your registration slip to your phone's photo gallery or PDF reader before leaving Guptkashi so you can show it without needing internet at the checkpoint.
- Arrive at Sonprayag by 5:00–6:00 AM for the trek: In peak season, the Sonprayag check post is busiest from 7:00 AM–10:00 AM. A 5:00–6:00 AM arrival means a shorter queue and you reach Gaurikund by 6:30–7:00 AM — perfect trek start time. The check post opens 24 hours, so an early arrival is fully possible.
- Store large bags at Sonprayag: If your taxi/bus is returning from Sonprayag, leave your large suitcase/bag locked in the vehicle or at the parking area's cloak room. You only need a 5–7 kg daypack for the Kedarnath leg. Collect your main luggage on return.
