Registration & Logistics
- Is Kedarnath registration mandatory?
- Yes — mandatory for all pilgrims. Register free at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. Carry the slip (printed or offline digital) + original photo ID. Verified at Sonprayag checkpoint. Daily cap ~12,000–15,000/day enforced. For May dates: register the same day the portal opens (March–April 2026). See our full registration guide.
- Can I register at Sonprayag or Gaurikund without pre-registration?
- On-the-spot registration is sometimes possible for off-peak dates (September–October) if the day's quota is not full. However, in peak season (May–June), all quotas are filled via online pre-registration and on-spot registration is generally not available. Do not rely on walk-in registration for May dates.
- What documents are required for Kedarnath registration?
- Online registration requires: Aadhaar number (mandatory for Indian citizens), passport-size photo upload, mobile number (for OTP verification), date of travel, next-of-kin name and mobile. At the Sonprayag checkpoint: registered slip + original photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID or Driving Licence) matching the name on the registration.
- Can I register for Kedarnath on behalf of family members?
- Yes — one person can register multiple family members in a single session. Each member needs their own Aadhaar number and photo. Each person receives their own individual registration slip with a unique QR code. All slips must be carried separately for the checkpoint.
- Is there a registration fee for Kedarnath?
- No — Kedarnath yatra registration at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in is completely free. Be aware of third-party websites that charge ₹200–₹500 for "registration assistance" — these are unnecessary. Only register at the official government portal. The government registration is direct and takes 10–15 minutes.
Opening & Closing Dates
- What is the Kedarnath opening date 2026?
- Approximately 29 April 2026 (Akshaya Tritiya). Exact date announced at Mahashivratri (February 2026) at badrikedar.org. Past opening dates: 2022 (6 May), 2023 (26 April), 2024 (10 May), 2025 (2 May). Window: consistently late April to mid-May. See our opening date guide.
- What is the Kedarnath closing date 2026?
- Approximately 22 October 2026 (Bhai Dooj). Exact date announced ~2 weeks before closing. Temple closes for winter; utsav murti proceeds in sacred procession to Ukhimath. See our closing date guide.
- Why is Kedarnath closed for 6 months?
- Kedarnath is at 3,583 m altitude — by November, the area receives heavy snowfall (3–5 m) making it inaccessible and uninhabitable. The temple is sealed and the deity (utsav murti of Lord Kedar) is moved to Ukhimath temple in Rudraprayag district for the winter. This tradition is centuries old — Kedarnath becomes a snow-covered wilderness from November to April.
Helicopter
- How do I book a Kedarnath helicopter?
- Book at heliservices.uk.gov.in (official Uttarakhand government portal). Choose helipad (Phata most popular), date and time slot. Payment online. Carry printed/offline confirmation + original ID. Cost: ₹3,500–₹5,500 one way depending on helipad. Book 30–60 days ahead for May. See our helicopter guide.
- Which helipad is best for Kedarnath helicopter?
- Phata helipad is the best for most pilgrims — largest capacity, most frequent service, 10–12 min to Kedarnath, best road access from Guptkashi (30 min drive). Guptkashi helipad: 12–15 min, within town. Sirsi helipad: closest to Kedarnath (7–9 min), fewer slots. All three connect to the same Kedarnath landing pad.
- Can the Kedarnath helicopter be cancelled?
- Yes — helicopter service is frequently cancelled due to bad weather (fog, cloud ceiling below helipad altitude, strong winds). Cancellations are most common July–August (monsoon). In case of cancellation: government portal refunds within 7–10 days. Rebook the next available slot. Always have a trekking plan as backup for helicopter cancellation in monsoon months.
Trek
- How difficult is the Kedarnath trek?
- Moderate to Moderately Difficult. 16 km, 1,650 m altitude gain. Suitable for healthy adults with basic fitness. The difficulty comes from: cumulative distance, altitude (3,583 m), sustained uphill gradient, altitude sickness risk at the top. Not a technical climb — no equipment needed. Horses and dolis available for those who cannot trek. See our difficulty guide.
- How long does the Kedarnath trek take?
- 6–8 hours ascending, 4–5 hours descending (for average fitness adults). Factors affecting time: fitness level, age, weather, trail congestion, altitude acclimatisation. Fastest trekkers: 4–5 hours up. Seniors with horse: ~4 hours. Start by 5:00–6:00 AM from Gaurikund to reach by noon.
- Is there a horse to Kedarnath?
- Yes — horses (ponies) available from Gaurikund trek start. Government-regulated counters with posted rates. One way Gaurikund to Kedarnath: ₹1,500–₹2,500. Doli (palanquin carried by 4 porters): ₹5,000–₹9,000 one way. Porter for bag (10 kg): ₹400–₹600. Return arrangements at Kedarnath.
- Is Kedarnath trek safe during monsoon?
- Open but challenging during July–August monsoon. Trail becomes muddy and slippery, leeches on lower sections, mountain views obscured by cloud, helicopter frequently cancelled. Start by 5:00 AM before rain builds (typically 1–4 PM). Check SDMA weather advisory at Gaurikund before starting. Not recommended for first-time trekkers during monsoon.

Health & Safety
- What is the altitude of Kedarnath?
- Kedarnath temple is at 3,583 metres (11,755 feet) above sea level. This is high enough to cause altitude sickness (AMS) in unacclimatised individuals. Gaurikund (trek start) is at 1,934 m. Altitude gain over the 16 km trek: 1,649 m.
- Can children visit Kedarnath?
- Children under 10: horse or helicopter recommended — 16 km trek is too long and the altitude too high for most young children. Children 10–15: can trek with a fit adult, but take it slow. Keep a horse option available. All children need pre-registration. Altitude sickness affects children too — if symptoms appear, descend immediately.
- Is Kedarnath safe?
- Yes — Kedarnath is safe for healthy, prepared pilgrims. Safety infrastructure: NDRF camp at Kedarnath, medical posts at Bheembali and Kedarnath, police outpost, emergency helicopter evacuation available. Main risks: altitude sickness (prevented by acclimatisation + slow ascent), monsoon trail conditions (July–August), extreme cold (adequate clothing prevents). The yatra has been well-managed since the 2013 floods with significantly improved safety infrastructure.
