Western Mussoorie Guide

Clouds End Mussoorie

Clouds End is the westernmost point of the Mussoorie ridge — where the road ends at a forest boundary, a heritage hotel stands at the edge of the Doon forest, and the valley below fills with clouds on monsoon evenings. One of Mussoorie's most atmospheric spots.

Complete Guide to Clouds End Mussoorie

Clouds End is 6 km from the Library end of Mall Road, at approximately 2,000m altitude. The name is literal — this is where the Mussoorie ridge road ends and the Doon forest reserve begins. Beyond this point, the road enters reserved forest, and no civilian vehicles may proceed. The view from Clouds End looks west into the deep Aglar river valley and the forested ridges toward Chakrata — wild, undeveloped and completely different from the commercial hill station energy of Mall Road.

The landmark here is Clouds End House, a heritage property established in 1838 (one of the oldest hotel buildings in India still in use), which operates as a heritage hotel and has a tea garden open to non-residents. The setting — terraced gardens at the edge of the forest, with the valley below — makes for one of Mussoorie's most memorable evening stops.

Getting to Clouds End

By road: From Mussoorie Library end, drive or take a taxi west on the Chakrata road for 6 km. Journey: 15–20 minutes. Taxi from Library end to Clouds End: ₹300–₹500 return. The road is a normal hill road; no 4WD required.

On foot via Camel Back Road: The 3-km Camel Back Road walking track connects eastward to Mall Road and westward via a forest path extension toward Clouds End. Walking from Library end via Camel Back Road to Clouds End takes 60–80 minutes on a pleasant forest and ridge walk.

Distance from Mall Road: 6 km from Library end (Mall Road west end). 8 km from Kulri (Mall Road east end).

Clouds End Viewpoint

The viewpoint at Clouds End looks west and south over the Aglar river valley — one of the deepest and most forested valleys visible from Mussoorie. On misty evenings (especially during the monsoon), clouds roll up through the valley below, giving the spot its name. On clear afternoons, the view extends to forested ridges of the Chakrata range 40–50 km distant. The absence of buildings, villages and roads in the view makes it distinctly different from the developed valley landscape visible from Mall Road.

Clouds End House (Heritage Hotel)

Clouds End House is one of the oldest heritage properties in continuous operation in the hills. Built in 1838, the building has been used as a residence, a hotel and a rest house across its almost 190-year history. The current property operates as a heritage hotel with a handful of rooms and a tea garden. The tea room is open to non-residents — a stop for chai, coffee and basic snacks with the forest and valley as the backdrop. The grounds are among the most naturally landscaped in Mussoorie — large old trees, a quiet terrace and an atmosphere of colonial-era retreat that the more commercially active properties on Mall Road no longer have.

Best Time to Visit Clouds End

Monsoon evening (July–September): The clouds rolling through the valley below at dusk are the most dramatic and the most atmospheric. Clouds End at 6 PM on a monsoon evening is one of Mussoorie's great visual experiences.

Late afternoon (all seasons): The western orientation of the viewpoint means it is best in the 2–3 hours before sunset. Morning visits have the sun behind you — useful for photography toward the valley.

October–November: Post-monsoon clarity gives clear views across the western valleys. The forest is green; the air is sharp. Very few visitors at this hour in off-season.

How to Reach Mussoorie

Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
  • Combine with Camel Back Road: The most efficient approach is to walk Camel Back Road (3 km from Library end) in the afternoon and continue to Clouds End — the forest walk is pleasant and the whole circuit from Library end to Clouds End and back is about 5–6 km, easily done in 2–2.5 hours.
  • Tea at Clouds End House: A stop at the Clouds End House tea garden is worth 30–45 minutes. Prices are basic — chai ₹30–₹50, basic snacks. The setting is the point.
  • Sunset photography: The western orientation makes Clouds End one of the better sunset photography spots in Mussoorie. October–November and March–April clear afternoons are the best conditions for dramatic sunset light.
