Mussoorie and the surrounding Garhwal foothills offer trekking options from gentle forest walks (Camel Back Road, Aglar Valley) to multi-day treks (Nag Tibba, Surkanda Devi, Chopta via Dhanaulti). Here is the complete trekking guide.

Complete Trekking Guide: Mussoorie & Surroundings

Easy Walks in and Around Mussoorie

Camel Back Road (3 km, 60–80 min, free): The most accessible trail in Mussoorie — a pedestrian-only forest path running parallel to Mall Road. Oak and rhododendron forest, valley views, horse riding option. No guide needed; well-marked and flat. See Camel Back Road guide.

Gun Hill forest trail (1.5 km, 40–45 min, free): The walking path to Gun Hill viewpoint (2,122m) through oak and rhododendron forest. A gentle uphill walk — appropriate for all fitness levels. The walk replaces or supplements the ropeway. See Gun Hill guide.

George Everest ridge walk (1 km from road, free): Short walk from the road near George Everest Peak (6 km from Library end) to the ruins and the valley viewpoint. Easy; flat or mild incline. An adventurous forest path continues further into the ridge for experienced walkers.

Moderate Treks near Mussoorie

Aglar Valley Trek (3–8 km, 3–5 hours, free): The Aglar river valley below the western Mussoorie ridge offers a forest trek of varying depth. Starting from near Library end or Clouds End, a trail descends into the valley through dense oak and Himalayan forest. The river at the valley bottom is a good turnaround point (about 3–4 km). Can be extended further for experienced trekkers. Best October–April; avoid monsoon (slippery paths, leeches). No guide needed for the first 3 km; a local guide recommended for deeper exploration.

Surkanda Devi trek (2.5 km, 60–75 min each way, moderate): 33 km from Mussoorie (trailhead at Kadukhhal). The 2.5-km trek to Surkanda Devi temple at 2,756m gains 350m altitude on a rocky, well-maintained path. The summit views — 360-degree Himalayan panorama — are among the best in the region. Suitable for most reasonably fit visitors. See Dhanaulti guide.

Multi-Day Treks from Mussoorie

Nag Tibba (30 km from Mussoorie, 2–3 days): Nag Tibba (3,022m) is the nearest Himalayan peak to Mussoorie and one of the most popular beginner-to-intermediate multi-day treks in Uttarakhand. The trail starts from Panthwari village (30 km from Mussoorie toward Dhanaulti). A 4-km trek from Panthwari reaches the Nag Tibba summit, with camping at the base (2,600m) and summit meadow. Total trekking distance: 8–12 km over 2 days. Best December–January (snow-covered, most dramatic views) or April–June (rhododendrons, clear skies). Operators from Mussoorie run Nag Tibba packages: ₹2,500–₄,500 per person for a 2-day package with guide, camping gear and meals.

Chopta–Tungnath Trek (via Dhanaulti, 3–4 days): Chopta (2,680m) is 90 km from Mussoorie. The trail from Chopta to Tungnath temple (3,680m, the world's highest Shiva temple) is 3.5 km. A 3–4 day itinerary from Mussoorie covers Dhanaulti → Chamba → Chopta → Tungnath trek → Chandrashila summit (4,000m) → return. For experienced trekkers; requires organised transport and guidance.

Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
  • Footwear: Trail shoes with ankle support for Surkanda Devi and Nag Tibba. Running shoes are sufficient for the Camel Back Road and Gun Hill walks. Full boots recommended for winter trekking on snow.
  • Guide recommendation: For the Aglar Valley deeper routes and all multi-day treks, a local guide is strongly recommended — the paths are not always marked and conditions vary. Ask at your hotel or the Mussoorie tourist office for recommended guides.
  • Hydration: Carry 1.5–2 litres of water on any trek. Mountain springs exist but are not reliable as safe drinking sources without purification.
