Overview
The Raj Jat is held once every twelve years. The most significant practical challenge for outside participants is not the walk itself but the coordination of permits, accommodation, transport and guide logistics in a region with limited infrastructure that becomes overwhelmed during the yatra period. A good package handles all of this so you can give your full attention to the experience.

What a Good Package Includes
A genuine Raj Jat package should include all of the following — be cautious of operators who leave major items unspecified:
- GMVN Yatra Permit — application prepared and submitted on your behalf; permit fee paid. Do not join a package that expects you to obtain this yourself without guidance.
- Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve Forest Permit — required above Wan; a good operator handles this seamlessly as part of the package.
- Medical fitness certificate assistance — guidance on obtaining a valid certificate from a recognised physician (or referral to a physician in Rishikesh/Gopeshwar).
- Transport — from the stated starting point to Wan and back. Specify whether this is private or shared.
- Accommodation — pre-booked rooms or campsites at each stage. During the Raj Jat, walk-in accommodation is not reliably available.
- Guide — a guide experienced in this specific route, with knowledge of the ceremonies, not just a general mountain guide. Ask about your guide's previous Raj Jat experience.
- Meals — at minimum, breakfast and dinner should be covered; lunch is often the climber's own responsibility on the trail.
- Emergency contact and protocol — the operator should have a clear emergency evacuation procedure and GMVN/Chamoli district contacts.
Questions to Ask Any Package Operator
- Has your company or guide team attended a previous Raj Jat edition?
- What permits are included in the package price and which are paid separately?
- What accommodation is booked — GMVN rest houses, private guesthouses or tents?
- What is the group size maximum? (Larger than 12 people per guide is not ideal on this route.)
- What happens if the official Raj Jat dates change or the yatra is delayed?
- Is there a medical evacuation plan if someone suffers from AMS above Bedni or Kailua?
History & Culture
Organised tour packages for the Raj Jat are relatively recent — the 2000 and 2014 editions saw the first significant participation by outside-India Uttarakhandi diaspora communities travelling with organised packages. The 2014 Raj Jat drew approximately 5 lakh participants, including several hundred from outside India — UK, USA, UAE, Australia — and this cohort largely used tour operators based in Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun who had specifically developed Raj Jat logistics expertise.
The local Garhwali communities have mixed feelings about the growth of packaged tourism around the Raj Jat. Concerns about commercialisation are real; the most respected operators are those who work directly with the Nauti village organisers and the GMVN to ensure that outside participants enhance rather than disrupt the yatra's spirit. When choosing an operator, local knowledge and community connections matter more than slick branding.
Tips
- Book packages at least 6 months before the yatra — good operators fill spots early, and permits and accommodation for the Raj Jat period require advance coordination.
- Ask specifically about the Wan–Homkund section accommodation — this is where planning most commonly falls short. Confirm that campsites at Bedni, Patar Nachauni and Kailua Vinayak are pre-arranged.
- A guide who has walked the Raj Jat before is not just practically superior — they carry the cultural and ceremonial knowledge that makes the experience genuinely meaningful rather than just a high-altitude hike.
FAQs
- Can I book a Raj Jat package from abroad (UK, USA, Australia)?
- Yes — several Rishikesh and Haridwar-based operators work regularly with overseas clients and have experience facilitating the additional paperwork (Indian visa coordination, Foreigners Registration Office registration, Inner Line Permit for Biosphere Reserve zones). The process is manageable but requires earlier lead time than for Indian residents. Contact operators 9–12 months before the expected yatra date to allow enough time for coordination, especially for Inner Line Permit applications for foreign nationals.
- What is the best package duration for someone who cannot take 21 days off work?
- The 7-day Wan–Homkund trek package (sometimes extended to 9–10 days to include the drive from Rishikesh) gives you the core high-altitude Raj Jat experience without requiring 3 weeks of leave. The Wan–Homkund section covers the most dramatic mountain terrain, the highest altitude ceremonies (Bedni Kund, Homkund), and the most intense spiritual atmosphere of the entire yatra. For someone who can attend only one section, this is the right choice.
