Complete Rishikesh Camping Guide
Where to Camp near Rishikesh
Shivpuri (16 km from Rishikesh) — Main camping area: The Shivpuri stretch is the most popular camping location near Rishikesh. Twenty-odd camping operators have semi-permanent camp setups on the shingle and sand banks of the Ganga at Shivpuri — pitched tents, bonfire area, outdoor dining setup with cots and tables. The camps are clean, well-run (by Indian outdoor standards) and the Ganga river views from the tent door at dawn are spectacular. The morning rafting from Shivpuri to Rishikesh (16 km) is included in most overnight packages.
Marine Drive area (26 km from Rishikesh): The Marine Drive section has a few more exclusive camping setups on isolated bends of the Ganga — further from other camps, quieter, more wilderness-feeling. Higher-end glamping operators have established Swiss tent setups here. Less accessible by public transport; typically included in operator packages with transport.
Brahmpuri (9 km from Rishikesh): The closest camping area to Rishikesh proper — river beach camping near the Brahmapuri rafting launch point. More basic than Shivpuri; cheaper. Good for budget camping with less focus on the full experience.

What to Expect at a Shivpuri Ganga Camp
Tents: Dome tents (4–6 person size for 2) or Swiss-style tents depending on the operator and package. Floor mat and sleeping bag provided; pillow usually provided. In colder months (October–March), an additional blanket is essential — confirm it's included.
Toilet and bathroom: Shared pit toilets and basic shower facilities at most budget/standard camps; glamping setups have better plumbing. Not luxury — this is beach camping in India.
Meals: Dinner and breakfast are cooked on-site — dal-rice, roti-sabji, papad, simple Indian veg food. Quality varies but is universally hearty and adequate. Most camps serve chai and biscuits at the bonfire in the evening.
Bonfire: Every camp has an evening bonfire on the Ganga bank — this is the social heart of the Shivpuri camping experience. Music (someone always has a guitar), chai, stargazing on the Ganga shingle. The sky above Shivpuri, away from Rishikesh's light pollution, is very dark and star-filled in clear weather.
Morning rafting: Rafting starts 6:30–7:30 AM from the Shivpuri launch point — directly from the camp. The 16-km run reaches Rishikesh beach in 2.5–3 hours. Operators include the rafting fee in the package.
Best Season for Rishikesh Camping
October–November: Best season — post-monsoon weather, cool nights (12–18°C), dry, excellent star-gazing. The Ganga is at its most photogenic. Camps are busy but not overwhelming.
February–April: Spring camping — slightly warmer nights, good weather, International Yoga Festival crowd in March. Very popular.
December–January: Cold nights (5–10°C) — sleeping bag rated to 0°C or lower is needed. The experience is atmospheric (river mist at dawn) but less comfortable. Fewer operators.
July–August: Camping is not recommended (monsoon, flooded banks, rafting banned).
How to Reach Rishikesh
239 km from Delhi (5–6 hrs), 24 km from Haridwar (45 min). Shivpuri is 16 km from Rishikesh on the Badrinath highway — shared auto ₹50–₈₀ or operator shuttle. See Rishikesh overview.
Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
- What to bring: Sleeping bag (October–April), head torch, warm layers for evening, personal toiletries, water bottle. Operator provides tent, sleeping bag (confirm rating), meals and rafting equipment.
- Book camps directly at Shivpuri: Arrive at Shivpuri by early afternoon, walk the camp strip and compare 3–4 operators. Prices and quality vary noticeably; spending 20 minutes comparing saves ₹300–₅₀₀ per person.
- The bonfire: The Ganga-side bonfire at Shivpuri is one of India's genuinely memorable budget experiences — the sound of the river, stars in a dark sky and chai by a fire is something that a ₹50,000-per-night hotel elsewhere in India cannot replicate.
FAQs
- What does a Rishikesh camping package include?
- A standard Shivpuri overnight camping package (₹1,500–₂,500/person) typically includes: pitched tent with sleeping bag, dinner (Indian vegetarian — usually dal-rice, roti-sabji, dessert), morning chai and breakfast, bonfire evening, and the morning Shivpuri–Rishikesh rafting run (16 km, Grade II–III). Transport from Rishikesh to Shivpuri may or may not be included — confirm at booking. Not included: alcohol (Rishikesh is a dry city; some camps allow personal bottles outside — check operator rules), personal toiletries, action camera.
- Is it safe to camp in Rishikesh?
- Yes — Shivpuri Ganga camping with registered operators is safe. The camps have been operating for 15+ years and the Ganga bank at Shivpuri is well above the normal river level. The main safety note: do not camp during monsoon (July–September) as the river level rises significantly, making low bank camping dangerous. All established operators relocate or close camps during the monsoon. Book with an established operator who has been running since at least 2015 — ask when they started and how many camps they've operated.
