Char Dham Pilgrimage

Rishikesh to Badrinath

Badrinath — the abode of Lord Vishnu at 3,133m in the Chamoli district — is 295 km from Rishikesh via the scenic Alaknanda valley road, passing five sacred river confluences and the famous Joshimath town.

Complete Guide: Rishikesh to Badrinath Temple

Badrinath is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites and one of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu temples). At 3,133m on the banks of the Alaknanda river, beneath the imposing Nilkantha peak (6,596m), Badrinath is simultaneously one of India's most dramatic and sacred landscapes. The road from Rishikesh to Badrinath is the classic Char Dham pilgrimage route — NH-58 (now renumbered NH-7) — running through the Garhwal Himalayas via Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Chamoli, Joshimath, and Govindghat before reaching Badrinath.

Transport Options: Rishikesh to Badrinath

By Private Taxi (Recommended)

A private taxi from Rishikesh to Badrinath is the most flexible option, allowing stops at Panch Prayag viewpoints and photo opportunities along the way. Cost: ₹5,500–8,000 one way; ₹10,000–15,000 return with 1–2 day waiting. Book through your hotel in Rishikesh or at the taxi stand near Laxman Jhula or Rishikesh ISBT. Innova/Xylo most commonly used. Travelling overnight without stops: possible but not recommended on these mountain roads.

By Bus (Budget Option)

GMOU (state roadways) buses run from Rishikesh ISBT directly to Badrinath during the yatra season (May–October). Fare: ₹400–600 per person. Journey time: 9–11 hours (more stops, slower pace). Frequency: typically 2–3 buses daily, leaving very early morning (4–6 AM). Private operators (Himgiri, Devbhoomi) also run overnight semi-sleeper buses from Haridwar and Dehradun to Badrinath during peak season (₹700–1,200).

By Shared Jeep

Point-to-point shared jeeps operate along the route — Rishikesh to Srinagar (₹120–150), Srinagar to Rudraprayag (₹80), Rudraprayag to Chamoli (₹120), Chamoli to Joshimath (₹150), Joshimath to Badrinath (₹80). This option is cheapest but involves changing vehicles at each town and can total 12–14 hours due to waiting times.

Key Stopovers on the Rishikesh–Badrinath Route

Devprayag (70 km from Rishikesh)

The most photographically striking of the Panch Prayag — the blue-green Bhagirathi and the grey-green Alaknanda meet to form the official Ganga. A 10-minute stop here is highly recommended. The Raghunath Temple overlooks the confluence. Small town with basic restaurants.

Srinagar Garhwal (103 km)

The largest town on the route, Srinagar Garhwal (not to be confused with Kashmir) has good restaurants, hotels, a university, and reliable ATMs. Good overnight option for those doing a 2-day journey. Note: the Srinagar area has a history of landslide risk (a major dam failure occurred in 2013).

Rudraprayag (140 km)

Another Panch Prayag where the Mandakini (from Kedarnath) meets the Alaknanda. This is where the road forks — left for Kedarnath (NH-107 via Tilwara), straight for Badrinath. Good hotels and restaurants; a recommended overnight halt for those doing the Char Dham in stages.

Joshimath (268 km)

A significant town at 1,890m serving as the winter seat of Badrinath, gateway to Auli ski resort, and starting point for Valley of Flowers. The Narsingh Temple here houses the Badrinath idol during winter. Note: Joshimath has been experiencing significant land subsidence — check current advisories before visiting. ATMs, hotels, and restaurants available. See Rishikesh to Auli guide for skiing details.

Govindghat (275 km)

The trailhead for the famous Valley of Flowers (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Hemkund Sahib (a sacred Sikh lake at 4,329m). An important 16 km trek begins here if you want to add Valley of Flowers to your Badrinath trip (typically a 2-day side trip from Govindghat — open July to October only).

FAQs
How many days should I plan for Rishikesh to Badrinath?
Minimum 3 days: Day 1 — Rishikesh to Joshimath (268 km, overnight). Day 2 — Joshimath to Badrinath, darshan, overnight at Badrinath. Day 3 — Return to Rishikesh. Adding Valley of Flowers requires 2 more days (total 5 days). Combine with Kedarnath for a full Char Dham short circuit (7–10 days).
Is the road to Badrinath open all year?
No. The Badrinath highway is closed from November (post-Diwali) until late April due to heavy snowfall. The road is officially cleared and the temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April–May, date varies annually). BRTF (Border Roads Task Force) manages snow clearance; check with Uttarakhand Tourism for the exact opening date each year.
Can I combine Kedarnath and Badrinath in the same trip from Rishikesh?
Yes — this is the classic Do Dham Yatra. Standard route: Rishikesh → Rudraprayag → Kedarnath (2 nights) → return to Rudraprayag → Badrinath (2 nights) → Rishikesh. Total: 7–8 days minimum, longer for a relaxed pace. Both temples have the same open season (May–November).
