Climate & Season Guide

Rishikesh Weather

Rishikesh at 356m has a subtropical climate — hot summers, monsoon rains and mild winters. The weather determines not just comfort but which activities are available: rafting is banned in peak monsoon, bungee runs year-round, and yoga season is defined by the International Yoga Festival in March.

Rishikesh Season Breakdown

Winter (October–February) — Best overall: The most pleasant season in Rishikesh. Daytime temperatures 16–28°C, cooler nights. Clear skies, low humidity, minimal rain. The Ganga is at its calmest and most photogenic after the monsoon floodwaters recede. Rafting is excellent September–November. The yoga and meditation atmosphere is most concentrated in this season. January and February see very low tourist numbers compared to summer — the ashram experience is more authentic and immersive.

Spring (February–April) — Peak yoga season: The International Yoga Festival (Parmarth Niketan, March 1–7) is the world's largest yoga festival; Rishikesh fills with international yoga practitioners. Temperature starts rising from March onward; April is warm but manageable. Rafting is at its best in March–April — the Ganga has settled from monsoon but is still energetic. See yoga guide.

Summer (May–June) — Hot but active: Daytime temperatures 32–38°C make outdoor activity uncomfortable in midday hours. Rafting in the morning (6–11 AM) is the best approach in summer — before peak heat. Bungee jumping runs year-round but early-morning slots are recommended in May–June. Mountain breezes from Neelkanth direction provide some relief. Heavily crowded with domestic tourists escaping plains heat.

Monsoon (July–September) — Scenic but restricted: The Ganga transforms during monsoon — a powerful, rapid flow that makes most rafting dangerous and illegal. The Garhwal hills behind Rishikesh turn spectacularly green. Landslides can occasionally close the Haridwar–Rishikesh highway. Yoga and ashram activities continue year-round. Budget travellers find the best rates in this season (30–50% lower than peak). September sees rafting restart on some stretches.

How to Reach Rishikesh

Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
  • Packing for Rishikesh summer (May–Jun): Light cotton clothing, high SPF sunscreen, hat, water bottle (2+ litres/day). Schedule outdoor activities before 10 AM or after 4 PM.
  • Packing for Rishikesh winter (Dec–Feb): Medium-weight jacket for evenings; thermal base layer for January mornings. Daytime is pleasant in light layers. River wind along the Ganga can feel cold — keep a jacket accessible near the ghats.
  • Packing for monsoon (Jul–Sep): Waterproof jacket essential; quick-dry clothing; waterproof footwear. Most yoga and ashram activities run sheltered — monsoon is actually a very valid yoga retreat season.
FAQs
Which is the best month to visit Rishikesh?
October is the single best month — post-monsoon clarity, comfortable temperatures (25–30°C days, 14–18°C nights), excellent rafting water levels, and significantly fewer crowds than peak March or May. February is a close second: mild temperatures, very low crowds, excellent rafting, and the lead-up to the International Yoga Festival. Both months offer everything Rishikesh has — rafting, yoga, Ganga Aarti, temples — in ideal conditions.
Can I visit Rishikesh in monsoon (July–August)?
Yes, but with expectations adjusted. River rafting is suspended on most stretches in July–August (the Ganga is too powerful — flash floods and debris make it genuinely dangerous). Yoga, ashram visits, Ganga Aarti, Laxman Jhula, Beatles Ashram and temple visits all continue year-round. The rain-washed Garhwal hills are strikingly green in monsoon. Hotel rates are 30–50% lower. The main constraint is rafting — if that is your primary reason for visiting, choose October–June instead.
