Yamunotri Preparation

Yamunotri Travel Guide 2026

Complete Yamunotri Yatra preparation guide — 10-step checklist, trek packing list, Surya Kund prasad how-to, Janki Chatti tips, altitude, dress code and registration.

Overview

Yamunotri is unique among the Char Dham: it requires a physical trek. Unlike Badrinath (road) or Kedarnath (helicopter option), every Yamunotri pilgrim must walk, ride or be carried up 6 km. This guide prepares you for everything from the highway to the hot spring.

Planning

10-step Yamunotri Yatra preparation checklist:

  1. Register online: registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in (free, mandatory for Char Dham). Do before leaving home. Keep QR code on phone.
  2. Book accommodation at Barkot: GMVN Barkot (gmvnl.in) — 4–6 weeks ahead for May, 1–2 weeks for September. Barkot is the best base (13 km from trek start, ATM, medical).
  3. Fitness: The 6-km trek has 641 m of ascent. Walk 30–45 minutes daily for 2–3 weeks before the trip. Not necessary for horse/palanquin users but helps with the temple complex and ghat navigation.
  4. Buy prasad ingredients: Raw rice (500g) + 4–6 potatoes + cloth jhola bag. Buy at Barkot market (₹80–₹130 total). Do not forget — this Surya Kund tradition is what makes Yamunotri unique.
  5. Trek footwear: Waterproof trekking shoes or trail runners with good grip. The trail has stream crossings and wet stone sections. Sandals, heels and smooth-soled shoes are dangerous on the upper sections.
  6. Cash from Barkot ATM: SBI Barkot is the last reliable ATM. Carry ₹2,000–₹3,000 per person for horse fees, temple donations, puja items, trail snacks.
  7. Warm layer in day pack: Even on a sunny May day, the temperature at 3,291 m drops sharply in shade or breeze. A fleece or light down jacket in your day pack weighs little and could be essential at the temple.
  8. Start the trek early: 6:30–7:00 AM from Janki Chatti. Reach temple by 9:30–10:00 AM before peak crowd. Return by 2:00 PM to start the drive back comfortably.
  9. Dress code: Traditional modest attire for the temple. Remove shoes at temple entrance (shoe storage available). Women: shalwar kameez or saree. Men: kurta or clean shirt + trousers. No shorts at the temple.
  10. Emergency: Basic health post at Yamunotri. Nearest medical facility: Barkot (35 km by trek + road). SDRF Uttarkashi: 9412905401. Carry your own basic medicines (paracetamol, ibuprofen, ORS, antiseptic).

Travel Tips

  • Hanuman Ganga bath at Hanuman Chatti: Pilgrims traditionally take a ritual bath at Hanuman Chatti (9 km before Janki Chatti, where Hanuman Ganga meets the Yamuna) before proceeding to the Yamunotri trek. A brief stop en route — take a dip in the cold river (a few minutes). Not mandatory but traditional.
  • Horse vs walking — choose consciously: If you are physically fit, walk the 6 km — the trek is the experience, not just a logistical necessity. The Yamuna gorge, the waterfalls, the forest, the gradual reveal of the temple — all are best appreciated on foot. Reserve horses for those who genuinely need them (elderly, knee/hip issues, children too young to walk).
  • Altitude at Yamunotri (3,291 m): Higher than Gangotri (3,048 m). Some visitors feel mild headache or breathlessness at the temple. Rest for 20–30 minutes on arrival, drink water, eat light prasad. Do not rush back down immediately — let your body adjust briefly before the 6-km descent.
Accommodation
  • GMVN Barkot: best base, book at gmvnl.in. See hotels guide.
  • Janki Chatti guesthouses: for earliest trek start. Basic, ₹400–₹1,000.
  • Homestay near Barkot: Garhwali family stay with traditional meals. See homestays.
FAQs
What should I carry for the Yamunotri trek?
Day pack with: water (1L), snacks, rain jacket, sunscreen, trekking shoes (waterproof), raw rice + potatoes + cloth jhola (Surya Kund prasad), photo ID, cash ₹1,500–₹2,000. No large backpacks — you're trekking not camping.
How does the Surya Kund prasad tradition work?
Buy rice + potatoes at Barkot/Janki Chatti. Put in cloth jhola (₹20–₹50). At Surya Kund: submerge jhola using provided hooks/ropes into 88°C spring. Wait 15–20 min. Remove, cool, take part to temple as bhog, rest home as sacred prasad. Hooks/ropes provided at Surya Kund.
Do I need to register for Yamunotri Yatra?
Yes — registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in (free, online). Required for all Char Dham. Keep QR code on phone — checked at highway checkposts. Not a time-slot system; registration is for safety tracking only.
