Yamunotri weather at 3,291 m: September is best (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐). Monsoon July–August is risky. Complete month-by-month temperature guide for your 2026 Yatra planning.

Overview

Yamunotri at 3,291 m has a classic Himalayan alpine climate — cold nights year-round, pleasant summer days, heavy monsoon, and early winter. The temple season runs April–November, with two clearly good windows: late April–June (spring, post-opening) and September–October (post-monsoon autumn). July–August (monsoon) should be avoided for safety reasons.

Planning

Janki Chatti to Yamunotri trek weather impact:
The 6-km trek (641 m ascent) is the crux of the Yamunotri visit — weather on the trail directly impacts safety and enjoyment. In May: trails dry, possible snow patches above 3,000 m. In September: perfect trail conditions — dry, cool, good grip. In July–August: slippery, flood-prone sections near stream crossings, serious landslide risk on the upper section near Yamunotri (many rockfalls in this gorge during heavy rain). In October: trails dry and firm, cold in morning, perfect for trekking.

Barkot and Janki Chatti weather (lower altitude):
Barkot (1,220 m, trek gateway) is approximately 2,000 m lower than Yamunotri. Summer temperatures: 20–28°C day. Monsoon: warm and wet. In July–August, even Barkot is affected by landslides on the approach roads. The Barkot–Janki Chatti section (13 km mountain road) is landslide-prone in peak monsoon.

Travel Tips

  • September vs May — September wins at Yamunotri: May has the advantage of the opening ceremony and fresh season energy. But September is better for the trekking experience — dry trail, clear mountain views, fewer crowds, easier accommodation availability, and the Yamuna running full and beautiful. If you can choose, September is the clear winner.
  • Carry a light rain jacket even in September: Afternoon showers are possible even in post-monsoon September in the Himalayan valleys. Bring a light packable rain jacket or poncho for the trek — it fits in a day pack and takes up minimal space.
  • Avoid the trek in monsoon rain: The Janki Chatti–Yamunotri trail has steep exposed sections and several stream crossings that become dangerous in heavy rain. Check the weather forecast (available at Barkot) before starting the trek. If rain is forecast, delay to the next morning.
What to Wear
  • May: fleece jacket (morning/evening), t-shirt (afternoon), warm hat and gloves for early morning trek start.
  • September: same as May. Layer up for the 6 AM–7 AM pre-dawn start from Janki Chatti.
  • October: warm mid-layer + windproof outer, thermal inner for nights. Days are sunny but cold at 3,291 m.
  • November (closing): serious winter gear — down jacket, thermal pants, warm gloves, hat. Not for casual visitors.
FAQs
What is the weather at Yamunotri in May and June?
May: 12–16°C day, 4–8°C night. Pleasant, clear, peak crowds. June early: manageable (14–18°C). June late: monsoon arriving, landslide risk. May is the best spring month. Avoid after 15 June.
What is the weather at Yamunotri in September?
Best month: 12–18°C day, 4–8°C night. Clear skies, dry trail, excellent visibility, low crowds, post-monsoon beauty. October also excellent (8–14°C day, 0–4°C night, quieter). Both offer outstanding Yamunotri trek conditions.
Should I visit Yamunotri in July or August?
Not recommended. Heavy rain (300–500 mm/month), high landslide risk on road and trek trail, flash floods in Yamuna gorge. Government sometimes restricts access. If unavoidable: travel mornings only, avoid after rain, never solo.
