2-Day Trip Plan

Mussoorie 2-Day Itinerary

Two days in Mussoorie is the most popular trip length — long enough to cover every major sight and experience the town's different moods from morning views to evening promenade. Here is the perfect hour-by-hour 2-day Mussoorie plan.

Complete 2-Day Mussoorie Itinerary

Day 1 – Mall Road, Gun Hill, Kempty Falls & Camel Back Road

8:00 AM – Check in and settle

If arriving by overnight bus, check into your hotel and freshen up. Hotels near Library end (mid-range) or Kulri (budget) both work well for the Day 1 programme. Most hotels in Mussoorie offer an early check-in for ₹500–₹1,000 extra, or hold your luggage for free while you begin sightseeing.

8:30–10:00 AM – Gun Hill

Go to Gun Hill immediately after arriving — this is the most important timing tip for Mussoorie. The Himalayan views from Gun Hill (2,122m) are sharpest in the first 2–3 hours of morning before clouds rise from the valley. Take the ropeway from Mall Road near Picture Palace (₹75–₹100 return, 2–3 min) or walk up through the forest (1.5 km, 40 min). At the top: views toward Bandarpunch and the Gangotri range, a small market, a Himalayan telescope (₹20).

10:00 AM–12:30 PM – Mall Road Walk

Walk Mall Road from Picture Palace west to Library end — the full 2.5 km stretch. This is the direction that takes you past the main shopping bazaar and toward the quieter heritage end. Stop for breakfast or brunch at one of the cafes (Rokeby Manor dining, Cafe de Tavern, or the simpler chai stalls on the road). Browse for woollen shawls, brass items and Uttarakhand honey.

12:30–1:30 PM – Lunch

Lunch near Library end. Good options: Hotel Broadway restaurant (mid-range, valley views), the Landour bazaar dhabas (budget, local food), or the fixed-menu thali places on Kulri's back streets.

2:00–4:00 PM – Kempty Falls

Drive to Kempty Falls (15 km west, 30 min). See the 40-metre falls, walk to the pool at the base (ropeway ₹50–₹80 or walk the steps), and explore the market area at the top. Return by 4 PM. Budget 30–45 min at the falls in peak season (queues); 15–20 min off-season.

4:30–6:00 PM – Camel Back Road

The 3-km Camel Back Road walk through the forest above Mall Road. Start from the western end (near Library) and walk east toward the ropeway base station. Views toward the Dehradun valley open up on the southern face; the forest is quiet and pleasant for walking. Horse riding available if you prefer (₹200–₹400).

6:00–8:30 PM – Evening Mall Road

The evening Mall Road promenade — the road is pedestrianised after 6 PM and becomes Mussoorie's social heart. Browse the evening market (shawls, local snacks, streetfood). Maggi at a stall, a hot drink. Dinner at a mid-range restaurant on Mall Road (budgets ₹400–₹800 per person; or ₹1,500–₹2,500 per person at a hotel restaurant).

Day 2 – Landour, Lal Tibba & Clouds End

7:00–10:00 AM – Landour and Lal Tibba

Start early for Lal Tibba (2,275m) — the clearest views are in the morning, and Landour is at its most atmospheric before the day warms. Drive or take an auto from Kulri toward Landour cantonment (2 km). Walk to Lal Tibba viewpoint (10 min from Landour bazaar). The telescope (₹25) gives close-up views of Bandarpunch, Kedarnath dome, Chaukhamba and Gangotri. Return to Char Dukan (four shops) for chai and butter toast at Anil's — this is one of Mussoorie's great simple pleasures. Allow 2.5–3 hours for the full Landour morning.

10:30 AM–12:00 PM – Landour Bakehouse and Lanes

Walk the lanes of Landour cantonment — colonial bungalows, the 1860s Kellogg Church, the Landour Bakehouse (walnut cake famous; opens 8 AM). Landour is literary and artistic Mussoorie — Ruskin Bond, India's most loved writer, lived here for decades. His bookseller (Cambridge Bookshop, Landour bazaar) is worth a visit.

12:00–1:30 PM – Lunch

Late morning or early lunch in Landour — the Char Dukan area has a few sit-down options. Or return to Mall Road for the wider choice.

2:00–3:30 PM – George Everest Peak

6 km from Library end (25 min drive), George Everest Peak sits at 2,000m above the Aglar river valley. The ruins of Sir George Everest's home and survey office are accessible via a 1-km walk from the road. The views west over the valley are some of the wildest in the Mussoorie area. Entry is free. Not on every tourist circuit — a good choice if you prefer less-crowded spots.

4:00–5:30 PM – Clouds End

The westernmost point of Mussoorie ridge (6 km from Library). The view here looks west over deep forested valleys toward Chakrata. The heritage Clouds End House hotel has a tea room open to visitors. On clear evenings, the sunset from this vantage point is outstanding.

6:00–8:00 PM – Departure

Final Mall Road stop for last-minute shopping. Dinner. Depart for Dehradun (last GMOU bus: check schedule, usually runs until 9 PM) or stay a 3rd night for the 3-day itinerary.

How to Reach Mussoorie

From Dehradun: GMOU bus (₹60–₹80) or shared taxi (₹100–₹150/seat) from Dehradun ISBT/clock tower. From Delhi: overnight bus (₹500–₹900) or Shatabdi train to Dehradun + bus. Journey: 35 km from Dehradun, 290 km from Delhi.

FAQs
Can I cover all Mussoorie sights in 2 days?
Yes — this itinerary covers every major attraction: Gun Hill, Mall Road, Kempty Falls, Camel Back Road, Lal Tibba, Landour, George Everest Peak and Clouds End. You will be walking 4–6 km per day on average, which is comfortable for most people. The only significant omission is Dhanaulti (24 km away) and Benog Wildlife Sanctuary — these require a 3rd day. Company Garden can be added to Day 1 afternoon by substituting 1 hour from the Camel Back Road walk.
Is a car needed for the 2-day itinerary?
For Day 1, a cab or auto is needed for Kempty Falls (15 km). Shared taxis from the Mall Road taxi stand to Kempty cost ₹100–₹150 per seat. A private cab for the day (for Kempty + return) costs ₹400–₹700. Day 2 can be done almost entirely on foot from Mall Road, with a brief auto for Landour (₹80–₹120 from Kulri). A car is helpful but not essential if you're comfortable with shared autos and willing to negotiate.
