Mussoorie Map Guide

Mussoorie is a linear hill town — the 5-km Mall Road runs west to east from Library end to Kulri. This guide explains the layout, how the main attractions relate to each other, and how to navigate the town and surrounding areas without a physical map.

Mussoorie: Understanding the Town Layout

The Mall Road: Mussoorie's Spine

Mussoorie is a linear ridge town — unlike circular or grid-planned cities, it is stretched along a single ridge at approximately 2,005m. The Mall Road (5 km long) runs roughly east-west, with Kulri at the eastern end (near Picture Palace) and Library end at the western end (near the municipal library). All of Mussoorie's main commercial activity happens along this 5-km stretch or within a few hundred metres of it.

The road is one-way for vehicles in most sections; pedestrianised after 6 PM in peak season. Walking the entire Mall Road from Kulri to Library takes 60–75 minutes at a leisurely pace with stops.

How Mussoorie Divides into Zones

Kulri zone (east): The busiest and most commercial end of Mussoorie. Dense shopping (shawls, woolens, handicrafts), restaurants, fast food, auto-rickshaw stand. Gun Hill ropeway is 5 minutes walk from Kulri clocktower. Most budget and mid-range hotels are concentrated in or near Kulri.

Central Mall Road: The middle section of the Mall — a mix of hotels, banks (ATMs), restaurants, and shops. The Clock Tower is the central landmark. The Savoy Hotel is set back from the Mall Road on the north-facing slope above the central section.

Library end (west): The western end near the municipal library. Bus stand (GMOU buses to Dehradun and shared taxis). The access point for heading west to Kempty Falls (15 km) or the Cable Car (Jhripani). Less congested than Kulri.

Landour / Char Dukan (north-above): The uphill extension of Mussoorie, 2–3 km north of central Mall Road and at higher altitude (2,275m). Access via the Landour road from Library end or from central Mall Road. Quieter, residential, literary character. Char Dukan ("four shops") is the informal name for the small bazaar at the Landour midpoint — home to Landour Bakehouse and the Ruskin Bond-connected bookshops.

Navigation Tips for Mussoorie Without a Map

Orientation: From Mall Road, the Himalayan range is always to the north (behind you, if you are facing the Doon Valley). The valley is to the south. Kulri is east; Library is west.

Finding your hotel: Give the hotel name to any auto-rickshaw or taxi driver — they all know the hotels. For Mall Road properties, specify "near Kulri" or "near Library" to help narrow the location.

Google Maps works well: Google Maps has good coverage of Mussoorie and Landour streets. The satellite view shows the ridge layout clearly. Download offline maps before leaving Dehradun (data can be patchy in some Mussoorie areas).

How to Reach Mussoorie

35 km from Dehradun (GMOU bus ₹60–₈₀, shared taxi ₹100–₁₅₀). 290 km from Delhi. See Mussoorie travel guide.

Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
  • Parking: Mussoorie has designated parking areas at Kulri and Library end (₹20–₅₀/hour for cars). The Mall Road is closed to private vehicles during pedestrian hours (variable by season — after 6 PM in peak season). Park at either end and walk, or use local autos.
  • The Camel Back Road shortcut: The Camel Back Road (the walking trail parallel to and above Mall Road) is actually a quicker and far more pleasant route between the Gun Hill area and the western Mall Road than walking along the busy vehicle-side of the main road. Use it to move between the central and western sections of the ridge in around 45–60 minutes.
