Complete 2026 Mussoorie Travel Guide

Essential Mussoorie Facts

Mussoorie is a hill station at 2,005m (6,578 ft) in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand, 35 km from Dehradun and 290 km from Delhi. Known as the "Queen of Hills," it sits on the southern spur of the Garhwal Himalaya, with the Doon Valley to the south and views of the high Himalayan range — Bandarpunch, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba — to the north.

Founded in 1823 by Lt. Frederick Young of the British East India Company, Mussoorie retains significant colonial-era architecture: The Savoy (1887), Kasmanda Palace (1836), St Paul's Church, the Christ Church, and Landour cantonment. The 5-km Mall Road is the social and commercial spine of the town; Landour (the higher cantonment area, 2,275m) is the quieter residential extension.

  • ATMs: ATMs available at Kulri and Library end. Carry cash — the Kempty Falls and Dhanaulti areas have limited ATM access.

FAQs
How many days are enough for Mussoorie?
Two nights (3 days) is the standard Mussoorie trip — Day 1: Gun Hill, Mall Road, Kempty Falls; Day 2: Lal Tibba, Landour, Camel Back Road, Clouds End; Day 3: Dhanaulti + Surkanda Devi trek day trip, then depart. Extend to 4 nights if including adventure activities, more Landour exploration, or George Everest Peak. One-day Mussoorie trips from Dehradun are possible (35 km) but feel rushed; you will miss the atmosphere that comes with staying overnight. See Mussoorie itinerary guide.
Is Mussoorie good for a solo trip?
Yes — Mussoorie is safe and accessible for solo travellers. Mall Road has restaurants, cafes and guesthouses catering to all types of visitor. The colonial-era architecture, literary history (Ruskin Bond has lived in Landour for decades) and the Himalayan hill-station ambience are particularly rewarding to explore at your own pace. Budget solo accommodation is available at ₹600–₁,200/night in guesthouses; the solo traveller premium is minimal in Mussoorie compared to more resort-oriented hill stations.
